Topic: Clamp <---> Extension <---> Shockmount/Mics

Thinking ahead to an upcoming show I'm going to tape.
Looking at the venue, what I need to do is clamp onto the balcony rail, and then extend my mics out as far as I can.
Do they make such a thing?  I know I'm not describing this well.
I'm envisioning a telescoping type contraption . . . like a big old car type antenna.
Help, please.

You just need a clamp with a large jaw (superclamp or similar) and a boom arm. You can find a telescoping boom arm that is small and light at any guitar center type store.

and mount this Bogen 3369 extension arm $38 that goes up to 92 inches



Or use the bogen C clamp it has a 5'' extension but then add heavy duty flex arm --I have them all and they work great.

Any specific recommendations for what to use, Moke?  I've not used one historically, but it's something I've wanted to add to my clamping setup for a while, and just haven't gotten around to it.

I never realized that the one end of my HD flex arm has a 3/8" thread. Nice!

if the rig is suspended over George W. Bush, Moke, I'd recommend not using a lanyard for safety and hoping for an earthquake or high winds instead

In theatrical lighting, every light that gets hung has to have a safety.  They are made from aircraft cable with a loop on one end and a clip on the other.

Would work just as well for a boom arm setup as long as you can get the cable around in a way that it wouldn't fall off if the rig fell...
 

A piece of nylon rope would work just as well, seeing as you could tie it directly to the arm or stereo bar.

That ones near to my heart since I work in the nuke-you-ler industry.

Low tech approach... use a regular mic stand, with the base of it bungeed to your seat, and top of it hanging out over the rail.  With an active rig, you can extend this a bit more than I could with my 5 pound LSD2.

Speaking of lanyards.... Nick's super mics cables are all I need 

But seriously... at Gathering of the Vibes they had this big movie camera on a 50' long pole they were swinging out over the audience to get these sweeping video shots... when suddenly the camera mount let go and it was dangling from the pole by it's cables hanging down a couple of feet lower than they expected..  I wouldn't have been surprised if it hit a few fans in the head.  Dooh!
