The Mystic is a small venue that is noisy (crowd) and many recordings I hear the bass "booms" a non technical term. This will be the venue I record the most at and the advice on the mod's is very helpful.

I ran some AT853 hypers from the back of the dance floor, against the rail at the Mystic a month or two ago.  In the past, I had tried recording further back, or even upstairs, and the shape and acoustics of that venue are odd, and can get real boxy and boomy.  But from the rail, close-up, that recording sounds better than a number of others I made of the same band in what generally would be acoustically superior venues.

At that distance, I wore ear protection.  With good levels, the tape sounds great.

Thanks to all the helpful folks here. I just finished oredering my new rig. ;D

And the winners are......
- Peluso CEM6's with the hyper caps
- Fostex FR2-LE, not modified yet........next year?
- Bogen 11 ft Manfrotto stand, Sabra ST2 and Canare cables

All for $1600, makes the wife happy, just a tad over budget.

Looking to break in everything with some Hot Butter at the Mystic on Dec. 15.

Tim with a big ol smile and a new found love for a delivery person I have yet to meet.

Nicely done! You have an excellent sounding, compact rig. Go for the busman/Oade mod (depending on where you bought it) next year for a nice upgrade. Shouldn't cost too much either.

No software involved with these things.  They're just recorders.  You'll need to go buy yourself a bigger CF card in order to record a whole show.  2gb is big enough for a whole show, but I'd get a 4 gb card or bigger if you buy the Fostex.  The 660 only will accept 4gb, none larger.
I have one of the earliest 660's and I've tested a 16gb card in it and it works fine at least for short tests.  I never got around to trying to fill up the card though.  But at least I can tell you that the card and its size are properly recognized and the displayed amount of recording time is what it should be for that size card.

There are 32gb cf cards now, by the way:
