Greetings: Newbie Question, Korg MR-1000 / SD 702

Hello Good People,

First off I'm new to this forum, so i'd like to say Hi, i'm also new to this recording malarky, i simply expressed an interest in the idea of location recording & my brother took it upon himself to buy me a surprise Korg MR-1000  my 1st question is in regards to the MR-1000 & it's to do with making a simple mono recording, is there any way of having the mono signal recorded across both tracks or at the very least monitor the signal with the headphone across both phones as opposed to left or right (depending on track you're recording too)

My second question is in regards to the Sound Devices 702, which i'm saving up for. In the UK, prices for the SD 702 are £1899 ($3917)
So it's much cheaper for me to order one from the US even taking shipping & tax into consideration, but i'm curious about powering the unit in the UK, does in have an auto sensing PSU? if not (& please excuse my ignorance) how would i go about making it safe for use in the UK?

You're right.  New prices for the 702 are MUCH less in the states (roughly half), PLUS the dollar keeps getting weaker and weaker so you have that going for you.

I don't know what an auto sensing PSU is, and I don't have my 702 with me (I'm right now on work assignment in Slovenia), but I'm 95% sure it's just like all other electronics devices in that there's a power transformer that tranforms your AC wall power to DC for use by your device.  Just like for 99% of the notebook computers out there, the transformer will work in the range from 100v to 240v.  Since your power system is 220V, the transformer will work fine if you connect to AC power.

However, for field use, you'll be using a battery...the Sony L or M series battery.  Of course, to recharge the battery using the 702, then you again need the transformer and cable.  However, to prevent wear and tear on most expensive peice of gear I own, I just use my old broken down Sony video camera to charge up my batteries and since I have a number of batteries, I have yet to use the AC cable on my 702...whenever I turn it on, it's powered from batteries.

I am an American in Europe, so I have anumber of devices with US-style AC plugs (laptop, DVD player, etc.).  I have been able to buy a cable with a Euro-plug for most of these devices (i.e. new cable between transformer block and wall).  Otherwise, I have used a plug adapter with no problem (even over long periods).  Additionally, if you call the company and explain that you are an ex-pat, they will often provide a new AC cord/unit at little or no cost...

It's almost cheaper to fly to the US and pick it up in person (and a bunch of batteries of course). 


The PSU that comes with the 7XX is autosensing. Damn well better be for $80. I do not have one since it is a relatively new, but they are indeed now shipping with them. I have the old style AC adapter.

I remember walking around gawking at the fancy toys in Gotham Sounds (somewhere in the 30's) when I lived there.  But you'd do even better to find someplace just across the river in New Jersey...Usually things/taxes are cheaper there!

Also, if you do some careful ordering, and inform your hotel, you can often schedule a delivery to the hotel...When you buy across state lines, no sales tax applies (and there is no VAT in the US)...

Maybe you can even catch a show at one of the many NYC venues!!!

I've had great experiences with them, they run a good shop.  I'm torn between the MR1000 (nice brother you got!) and the 702 - there's a guy here on TS, Busman, who does a mod where he improves the preamp circuit (puts in better op amps, etc.) that are supposed to make it rally sweet.

Hey everyone.  Hopefully I am not taking this too off topic but hope that someone can shed some light for me.  Just started on this thing and am interested in buying a recorder.  My decision has come down to 2:  Korg mr-1000 and Sound devices 702.  I know the 702 has the reputation of being a solid well built piece of equipment and is supposed to have some decent pre's in them.  The korg however is almost half the price and records in 1 bit audio.  I could get two of these!  I am worried though about how reliable it is and am not sure how the sound quality stacks up between the two when it is just the box alone w/o external pre's.  My plan is to use one of these devices alot in some adverse conditions (hot, cold, dry and moist air, and some rugged terrain).  I need it to be able to hang at my side from a bag and it must have the ability to be mobile with me. I wont be dropping the damn thing if I can help it (and I can do a good job when it comes to protecting my baby:) But its got to be able to handle some bumps here and there.  Last but not least, it has to sound excellent on its own (with the exception of the Korg because of the price I could afford a pre that costs about as much as the korg unit itself if need be . . . not so for the SD 702)  I've heard good and bad things about the pre's on the Korg and have not heard anything on the SD's except that they are very good. . . and I think that was from sound devices themselves.  I'm gonna go crazy here if I don't make a decision soon!

PS -  if anyone has any input on the possibility of using two of these together to create a surround sound field let me know. . . I do remember hearing that they are not linkable like the more pricey sound devices 700 series recorders.
