Cat Power taping?
« on: May 03, 2004, 09:57:41 AM »
Anybody got any recent experience trying to openly tape Cat Power?  The most recent thing I've seen (on BTAT I think) was from August '03 where she told somebody they couldn't use a DAT, but was eventually convinced.

Just trying to figure out what I'd be up against, and if I've got enough energy to put into it. . .

Thanks

Sloan

last year I taped her, well the tape got cut and it was horrible quality, although they didnt mind about taping at all, even lent me a stand.  (ran oktavas) too bad my taped sucked.  The stupid bartender slamed the change so hard into the cash register every time someone paid for a drink and you could actually hear this on the tape as well as lots of people talking.  Run your stand high.

Cool, thanks for the reply. Did you go through the asking process, or just set up like you knew what you were doing?  I hate going through the hassle of asking them unnecessarily, but then I'd also hate to be gone off on for assuming.

Funny you mention the cash register, this venue (The EARL in Atlanta) has an old-school cash register that rings a bell loudly when it's operated, acoustic tapes from there are always easily identified  ;D

Well originally I was going to try for a stealth recording with the oktavas, my friend and I had split the stuff up to stealth.  We realized it wasn't going to happen and we asked someone inside who worked there (not security) he said as long as they were cool with it and we asked the sound lady and she was fine with it we set up right beside the board and the guy who worked there was nice enough to lend a boom stand which just wasnt high enough.

The cash register was really annoying.  I'm not a huge cat power fan but I did enjoy the show.

I HATE having to find out with venues but asking the sound man / lady isnt too bad.  I would say if the venue isn't hardcore about pat down / bringing a stand in just bring it in and if they ask say they allow taping.

Cool, thanks again for responding.  I've been making inroads at this particular venue, seems they're starting to get used to me, so from the sound of the way your experience went, I'm gonna show up and do my thing, and look like this is what I -always- do at Cat Power shows  ;D  Although this will be my first time seeing her. . .

Thanks

No problem, and yeah if the venue has seen you taping before you should be okay thats how it was for me.

good luck

One more question for you:

I just got another response elsewhere that indicated she's cool with cassette, but not DAT or MD, 'cause those were likely to end up on filesharing networks. . . How recently was it that you taped her?

Thanks once more

Success!! I asked a familiar face at the venue if he thought she'd mind, and he went back and asked, "She wants a copy".  No problems!  Except for a couple jackasses, but there's at least one in every crowd.

After the show I went up to her at the backstage entrance and said "How would I go about getting you a copy of your show tonight?"  She said "Ummmmmmmmm . . . " and eventually turned away; I stood there looking like an idiot for a minute and then split.  I guess I'll send a copy to her management company and hope she gets it. . .

The show was GREAT!  She is an eccentric, and did stop a couple songs before they were finished, but nothing as crazy as some of the stories I've heard (playing 3 songs and leaving the stage in tears, etc.).  Good stuff.

Thanks
Sloan

does she allow sbd patching?  I was planning on seeing her in NYC next month, two shows in one day, along with Iron & Wine.

I didn't ask about that at all.  I'd sort of doubt it, but then again, I also heard she wouldn't allow DAT, which she did. . .

I thought it was really good, but for background I'll tell you that it's the only time I've seen her, and I don't (yet) own any of her albums.

Tough tape to pull though, she plays really quiet for the most part, the applause was much louder . . .

I'm totally unfamiliar, I think I've heard three songs of hers but I dug them...mainly doing these for friends but Im a HUGE fan of any woman on a piano!

The Bowery has speakers hanging from the ceiling right next to a small balcony...I'll go stack-hugging as always!

Would probably be a good show for stack-hugging.   Most of the songs she played (quiet) electric guitar, about 3 of 'em were piano. . .
