DDS Cleaning Cartridges ok For DAT machines?
« on: May 10, 2004, 10:49:41 PM »
It seems both music stores here don't carry DAT Cleaning cartridges...Kind of strange since they carry DAT tapes and Machines...

Most computer stores carry the DDS Cleaning Tapes and since you can use 60m DDS tapes without problems what about the cleaning tapes?

I've never tried my DDS cleaning tape in my DAT deck. I mean, it might work, but with the DDS tape, it is cut in such a way that it will run for a set amount of time, then eject. I don't know if the DAT deck will respond in the same way to the holes in the tape.

You're probably better off looking online for a DAT cleaner for audio decks, it shouldn't cost any more than $4. Mine came with my new DAT deck, so I haven't had to buy a new one yet.

I've used a DDS cleaning tape in my decks without any adverse effects, and there's no time restriction on how long/short you have to run it - how are your DDS tapes cut, Jeremy? Just curious as I've never heard that before...

I rationalize it this way...DDS tapes hold info that's much more valuable than music. If it's good enough for highly-sensitive computer info, it's good enough for music. And if a cleaning tape is good enough to clean those drives, it's good enough for my decks. :)

I pulled out my DDS cleaner and a normal DDS and DAT tape, and I didn't see any difference myself, but this site seems to think that there are differences in the recognition holes. link - about halfway down, under "Cleaning Cartridge Information".

No, I'm sure there's some kind of difference...I think I phrased my question poorly, sorry. What I mean is, I've never seen a DAT deck exhibit DDS drive behavior - i.e. take in a DDS cleaner, run for 30 seconds, and eject automatically. Does yours do that?

If anyone wants brand new, sealed DDS cleaners for FREE, send me a PM.
(This does mean you reply to this thread saying, "yeah, I want one so send ME a PM")

Oh, no, I never tried. I just use the DAT dry cleaning tape that came with my M1, and the DDS cleaner only on the data drive. I don't know, I just never wanted to try using that tape in the DAT machine. I like to keep 'em seperated. Though I do use DDS tapes to record in my M1 about 99% of the time.
