Picking out a back up HD?
« on: May 13, 2009, 03:18:09 PM »
Rite now I have all my music on a 1tb Lacie Big Disk Extreme+ external hard drive, and have some of it backed up on smaller drives.  What I want to do is get another 1tb drive use as a back up.  It would be cool if I could mirror the drives once and a while so they have the exact same contents.  I was looking at new drives and am not sure if I should get the exact same brand/model or if I should get something different.

Questions:
Should I get the same HD I all ready have or get a different brand/model?
How do I set up the second drive to keep an exact copy of the first drive?
If the two drives I am using are different brands will that effect my ability to mirror them?
Do hard drives come with the SW to mirror them or do I get that from another source?

Any info would be great.  I worry that something will happen and everything will be lost.  Way too much work went into this music collection to take that chance.  Wondering how other people back their music up, if I am on the right track or if there is a better option.

Depends on what you mean by "mirror".  For real-time mirroring, you'll need RAID1.  Not worth it, IMO.  I mirror nightly using freeware.  More info in the reasonable redundancy thread.
