I am looking to buy a cheap desktop computer to put all of my recording on. This computer will not run on the internet (only time it will be used on the internet is to get CD Wave and firmware updates on my M-audio 24/96 card).

When it comes to computers I am so lost on specs. So anyone here know if this machine can handle regular transfers of DAT tapes ok? (from a 7-pin to m-audio 24/96) thanks for looking guys.

For what you want to do this would work http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,102484.0.html though I would recommend upgrading the memory to the max the motherboard supports. While it is a little more expensive than the two you have linked to, it also includes a memory card reader if you ever want to transfer shows you have recorded to a memory card. For transferring DATs, any of the three would be more than adequate.

i'd say that both of those computers are "ok computers" but nothing more than that.
you can build yourself an Intel based machine for just a tad more. stay away from that e-machine and it's sempron chip.

If I were you I would build your own computer it's super easy to do.

Do you plan on doing any editing or processing of files on this machine. If so, I would go with a Core 2 Duo and at least 2GB of RAM.

I have had good luck with Dell.  They offer good prices, good guartantees and a good computer.  My experience is that they stand behind the product.  It may take a few calls for you to go through their list of attempts to remedy the problem, but they do get it right.

Whichever you choose, have fun

You also might want to check out:

http://slickdeals.net/

Good deals on basic desktops pop up all the time. There is a good deal on Dell Vostro Mini tower on there now. Looks similar to what you've got (except it's $400), plus you get a OS and a 20" LCD monitor (and some other goodies).

I did that a couple weeks ago. I really like my Dell, and it works well just great for doing audio only.
