h120 charging question...couldnt find w/ a search
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:27:23 PM »
i have lent my h120 to a friend to take to hookahville.  he let the battery run all the way down.

he says it wont charge with the OEM charger.

does he just need to let it sit for several hours on charge?

is it possible the battery is shit now that its been ran down?

any other potential things that could be wrong?

thanks in advance!

1) If you plug it in with the OEM, does it turn on? (thus implying the unit works)
2) How olds the battery? Any damage to the unit?
3) Have you already tried letting it sit on the charger for +12 hrs?

I have run mine down once or twice and it's rebounded, wonder if there is something else wrong or if it finally gave out.

The 120 doesn't turn on when the charger is applied. The green LED around the middle lights up to indicate charging.  When the battery is charged the LED goes off.

.

Umm, mine will turn on. I plug it in, hit play and it turns on. Is this a communication barrier?

If you don't press anything it doesn't turn on.  If you just plug it in and set it down the green light comes on to show it's charging.  When it's done the light goes off.

Correct. I went back to my post and I see where the confusion is coming from.
I intended to ask if he plugs it in, can he turn it on. Just to eliminate that something in the power chain has gone bad.

I've had laptop batteries go bad and not retain a charge before, and I've also had the connector both the charger and internally go bad (battery was good, unit bad). Just trying to rule out some stuff.

What kind of OEM charger is this? The ratshack type with loose connectors where you can reverse polarity?

Just to be sure, he should check the voltage coming out of that charger with a multimeter, to make sure it conforms to the Iriver specs.

BTW, I regularly let my H120 run down all the way, with no adverse effects. YMMV.

make sure he used the proper charger. i fried an h120 with the wrong charger once. i plugged in a dvd batt charger and it immediately died. i think a red light came on when plugged in after that. this is a very easy way to kill a unit.

And, yes, I know I suck about getting stuff circulated.  ;)
