well,, i have had the chance to use these new 4022s several times now in the studio as a spaced pair to capture piano/flute duos for a variety of players doing auditions and competitions, and wanted to give a bit of follow up on how they are doing.
i just did a video for a young girl applying to perform on "From the Top". i recorded the audio separately, and then sync'ed it up with the video (about 30 minutes worth). again, i set the 4022s up about 6 feet high, and about 5-6 out from the players. turned out to be some of the best recording like this i have ever done. huge warm flute sound, nicely diffused, not in-your-face like so many cards i have used in the past for this work (inlcluding DPA 4011s, akg c481s, schoeps cmc64s). piano is well defined, and overall balance was near perfect.
the mics seem tailored to mid-field (free-field) distance, with a slight rise around 6k, easily controlled with a touch of EQ, so they should be good for a wide variety of applications ranging from near-field work in the studio to diffuse field work in remote venues. hope this info helps a little for those looking at affordable omnis.
