Problems with Sony D50 mic in
« on: November 16, 2009, 01:29:56 PM »
I started using my mics with the D50 the other night, and found that there were drop outs and pops using the 1/8" in with my spsb battery box. Anyone else having these problems and any idea what Sony's repair policy is? First couple of shows sound fairly BAD at times while using external mics.

Are you sure the problem is the mic in and not the input or output of the bbox? I had the same problem with a SP bbox one time and the input jack was broken. Try to move the connector of your mic at the input or try to connect you mic without bbox to the mic in and see what happens
Recorder: Sony PCM M10 red

I'll do that. I have other mics I can hook up, too. It's an odd thing, does it when the 90 degree connector is rotated downward, but not upward......

it was the SP bat box 1/8" connector. I'm sending it in today

There are definitely issues with the D50 line-in (and so perhaps with the mic-in as well) with Neutrik right-angle plugs.  You can reproduce the drop-out by putting pressure on the input plug, if this is your problem.  I ended up ditching my SP cables and getting Vark Audio to make me ones with Neutrik on one end (for my MMA6000) and Switchcraft on the D50 side.

Vark cables also solved an issue with my MiniR84 giving me rare random digiglitches (maybe once/twice per hour), I swear by these guys.

interesting, that was the prob, I sent the bb in already.....

have you got a link for the cabling you use? I might maybe need to go from the 1/8" out on the SPBB to a 1/8" shorty cable and then to the d50?

ta, WiFiJeff, for the email with the info, I regret I sent the Bbox in without checking it to another recorder. I just wiggled the 1/8 right angle, got the drop outs and considered that the "aha" moment... so, Sound Pros has the bbox now, and I will at least get a new output wire and 1/8" right angle installed on it......if it still has the problem when I get it back, I'll need to get an 1/8" f to 1/8" male shorty. thanks to all, but esp to WiFiJ ;D
