SP-CMC-8>ST-9100>R09-HR optimal settings?
« on: March 12, 2010, 12:43:42 PM »
Hello:
Recently I jumped the Edirol bandwagon.
My previous was a Sony M1, so, this was my rig:
SP-CMC-8>ST-9100>M1
Now would be this:
SP-CMC-8>ST-9100>R09-HR
Someone has the "optimal settings? I have the feel that deep bass is missing.
For the record I use LINE IN, on the Church I use it more than halfway, knob can be turned all the way up with no clipping, my music; loud pop, rock shows
Thanks!

I recorded with a CMC-8's (AT943's) and a D7/M1. I found my DAT recordings had more warmth to them than solid state recording with those mics.  I never found them to capture enough low end for my liking, so I switched to the AT853's and found a lot of improvement.

I am assuming you are running the bodies with the card capsules? Using omni caps if you have them may improve the low end.

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

Using cards, yes using the bodies withe the AT943's capsules,
so, AT853's omni caps would improve, OK
Previous DAT tapings,  yes! you said it! are more warmth!
thanks for the recomendation.

Try either the 853 card or omni capsules with those 943 bodies.  You will need an adapter (2) to screw them on. You might want to see if someone here has the adapters. If I remember correctly, they are not as cheap as they use to be.

First of all, make sure you haven't accidentally engaged bass roll off on the R09HR (Low cut switch on the back) or on the preamp (the switch is inside the battery compartment on mine).  You will probably never want that with cardioid caps.

To answer the original question... The optimal setting is probably to get the ST9100 set so that you can get the right levels with the R09HR set to "mid scale".  What's the gain range on the R09HR?  0-80? So the ideal would be to have it set to 40, and most of the gain coming through the ST9100.  In my case, I have the original R09 which is 0-30, so I'm shooting for 15.

That said, if you move the gain knob on the ST9100 you might get a lot of static type noise while you are cranking on the knob (at least on mine I do).  So the objective is to put that in about the right place, leave it there, and then go up or down a little on the R09 to fine tune.  That's what I do.

It's generally said that "unity gain" on the ST9100 is at about 11:00.  So below that you are reducing the incoming signal, and above that you are adding gain.  If it's a loud show I've learned that I'll basically set it to 12:00, at which point the Preamp is acting just as a battery box without adding much gain.  If it's something like a quiet acoustic thing, I'll just crank the St9100 all the way up.
