I don't get the "disappointing gain" comment either, especially from someone who moved on to a Littlebox which as nice as it is, doesn't offer a ton of gain either.  Earlier fmaderjr said something about having a mod done that was problematic, perhaps even after it was "fixed" there was still something not right in the modded gain structure.  All I know is I've taped some quiet shows with a stock unit and had no issues getting adequate levels or clean recordings.

You may be right that my machine might never have worked properly.

I bought it wanting a 1 box system and expecting plenty of gain and didn't seem to get it. With the littlebox, I knew the gain limitations and thought it was still worth the price. For most of what I record I can get enough gain from the littlebox with the recorder at unity. If not, I can add some gain from the recorder.

I admit I'm a hater of this machine. Nothing but bad experiences with it. Nothing both good experiences with the R-09HR & Sony M10, either alone for stealth or combined with littlebox or MixPre for phantom powered mics.

I'm not that hard to please. Also hated my Zoom H2 that I bought before finding this board, but satisfied with most all my other purchases.
