Just to note, the pictured ToddR setup is a little different than what I think Richard (and I know I) sold.  You can also directly wire the caps without using "active" cables, which makes the setup cheaper, if a bit less stable.

IMHO one of the absolute best sounding small setups - excellent for  >:D (better than any hyper or cardiod in the sub-$1000 class) and certainly competitive in quality for open work either (although more competition there from Busman mics and other sub-$1000 mics that are quite good).  I particularly liked the ck93.

acidjack I see that you have mentioned in various places that you particularly like the ck93. I know a bit off topic, but when do you use a hyper caps as opposed to cards?

Thanks for the insight, acidjack.

Must the active cables be hardwired, or is it possible to craft them with a connector, for switching polar patterns?
It's also good to know if the cable maker must have the actual capsules at hand when crafting them, or if I can pick up the caps separately.
Slightly OT, which members/retailers here at TS usually make these cables?

I used the CK93/CK91 setups a lot a few years ago.  Self-modded setups, with wires and a battery box, no bodies.

I really like the flat frequency response, and the stable hyper pattern.  The sound is uncolored and smooth over the response pattern.  What I don't like is the lack of detail.  *In my opinion* the mics tend to "blur" or "smooth out" the detail/realism of the sound.

I could recommend these mics  in at least two cases.  One is for voice/interview work, eg., to go along with video (very good imaging).  Another case is where you have a soundboard + mic mix (get detail from the Sbd feed).  But I am no longer satisfied with the sound of the CK93 *alone* for music.  I often find myself preferring another mix, either omnis (eg., Senn KE4 or Countryman B3) or even something like AT822.  The later is colored, but has more detail and sounds a bit "richer" than the CK93.

To each is own, I guess.  What I recommend is getting a decent pair of omnis (even a pair of Panasonic WM6x will do).  Plug those into a flash recorder, and run on the same stand as your CK9x.  Then you can compare.  The difference in detail should become clear.  Also, try listening to both recordings in mono (one channel at a time).  This will isolate differences in stereo imaging vs differences in detail.

Hey Richard, have you ever tried the hyper-cardioid caps that come with the Studio Projects C-4's?
I owned a pair of C-4's a while back, but they didn't have the hyper-cardioid caps.

I owned a pair for a short time.  I think I paid around a $100 brand new for the pair.  Here are some samples of the few recordings that I made with them.

Ted, I didn't know it was possible to get a pair of the C-4's with just hyper-cardioid caps.
Did you buy them directly from Studio Projects?

No, I had a set of c4's then bought the hypers from BSW.
