Gangster Windscreens for 853's?DIY
« on: July 15, 2010, 03:29:22 PM »
Don't have time to sew, and buy me some furry cloth, thinking of double socking, rubber band.  Might have to go lowpro with my 853 cards tommorow night, outdoor, open park, right next to the water, no omni's in possesion.  Any better ideas?  Oh and another positive, chance of scattered storms

I put a set of AT853s through a 40° cycle on my washing machine a few weeks ago, and they still work. I personally wouldn't worry overly about rain.

Dunno about the socks, give it a go!

Dead teddy paws! A visit to your local thrift store, big pair of scissors, some quick reverse taxidermy, and voila:

these don't affect the sound any more than windscreens you can buy? don't teddy bears have some sort of nylon lining inside the fur? wouldn't that affect sound?

Fortunately, the fabric is very lightweight and open-weave, and the polyester stuffing easily comes out (though in endless fist-fulls), creating innocent fun for the whole family (and possible later use in small hi-fi speaker enclosures).

I have no plans to trade my shure 81's for dismembered teddybear parts.   Though it would be great to hear a comp.  I definitely notice when I add my deadrats to my shures - I lose a lot of detail on the top end.   As we've discussed in other threads, there are multiple factors that influence whether wind can be heard on a recording.  Similarly, the impact of windscreens is most easily noticed on some types of sources (loss of high freq detail being the biggest).

I dare someone to try and return a bear to the store after taking the parts (and roll tape),  "I bought this teddybear but didn't notice it has no arms or legs. I can't give this to my kid!"

And just wait!

Police investigating dismembered teddybears

Police investigators are puzzled by the appearance of multiple dismembered teddybears around town today.  Investigators are trying to piece together a motive for the dismemberments.  The bears were found missing arms and legs.

State Police lieutenant Eugene Woodsman says the dismemberments may be a serious hate crime, "A lot of people reefer to the state police as bears.  We want to know if these individuals are perpetrating some kind of hate crime or threat against the state police. We are testing DNA evidence and reviewing camera footage from local toy stores.  This is a serious felony and we will get them.  We have a special place for people who abuse teddybears. Just think of the children who will now go without teddybears thanks to this cruel act."

Local charities are trying to find homes for the dismembered bears.  And one charity is even constructing prosthetic replacements for the bears with donated socks.

When hunting, I always try to show respect, and use the whole animal!

NOTE: You should probably provide some stiffening inside, to hold the fabric as far as possible away from the mic capsule. I used a square of nylon insect screen rolled onto a piece of slit vinyl tubing the right diameter to slide onto the mic (see the spacers in pic 2).
