Solution 1 is perfect, but even the 2 R44 have significant drift when not tied together (and they are RIGHT NEXT to each other!)
Solution 2 is where I'm at now. I can't stand trying to sync stuff up that isn't, and I find the R44 to do a good enough job for my needs. I really should learn to live with just 2 channels, eh?
I would never expect any two machines without timecode or word clock sync to match clocks. That's why they sell word clocks and time code!
Manual sync is not for everyone, but don't get discouraged! 2 channels is infinitely better than no channels, but 4 can be even better!

Seconding the comment about being careful with battery polarity.  I damaged mine that way some years ago and had to get it fixed by a service agent.
