Necro-Bump

I have a Mk II which I'm using for DAT transfers and it intermittently tells me that the card is write protected when that's not the case.

If it's the sensor which is dirty, how might I clean it?

I have tried removing and inserting the card and sometimes I can get it to work.
I'm finding that if I push on the side of the SD card with the protection switch as I insert, it's more able to overcome this.

I've mostly been leaving the machine powered on because my clock battery is dead.
If anyone has a recipe to change the internal clock battery that is surefire, I'd be game to open it up, but from my limited searching it appears to be buried pretty deep inside.

It's a situation where I record with it and leave for the day while it's running, then come back at night and try to do the next transfer and it complains CARD LOCKED
(or overnight, likewise)

thanks for any advice

Have you thought about cleaning the port with Deoxit or something of that nature?

No, I have some contact cleaner, but it comes out pretty fast and I don't wanna mess it up if I can help it

Don't think spraying the cleaner on a cotton swab will work cause the slot is too thin for most swabs!

Use a tiny piece of Scotch Tape and tape the lock tab on the SD card so that it is secured in the UNLOCKED position.
Just make sure the Scotch Tape is secured well on the SD card so that it doesn’t accidentally get stripped off and stuck in the slot.
I’ve had those lock tabs play tricks on me before.

I've never had the card come out with the lock tab in the lock position.

Plus, there's the case where it goes from recording to stopped to locked without ever physically moving the card.

putting scotch tape in the slot sounds like a recipe for more jams, not less

^I’ve had cards (especially older ones) that have had loose lock tabs.
When I’d put the ‘unlocked’ card in a card slot, the lock on card would get pushed into LOCKED position.. and then when card was pulled out of slot, the lock would get pulled back into UNLOCKED position. Tricky.
It took me a while to figure out what was happening.. then I taped the lock tab secured in UNLOCKED position on card and problem was solved.
YMMV.

Try searching "SD card slot cleaner" and there are several options including faux SD cards with cleaning contacts and cleaning swabs shaped to fit into the slot.

ok thanks for that tip.

Now I wonder if it's an electrical or a mechanical problem!?

Is a dirty pin connection considered mechanical or electrical!???
