Decent affordable fig-8?
« on: November 09, 2012, 05:27:23 PM »
I'm looking for a sdc fig-8 that's good enough for MS and double MS recording to be used in combination with two Rode NT-5. Affordable as in: substantially below the usual Schoeps and Neumann mics.

Any suggestions?

Cascade victor with lundahl transformer beats all of them.  There is nothing better at this price or 3x's. Once you go ribbons you won't go back. Buy now and thank me later.

Does it have to be small diaphragm?

The directivity pattern of all affordable LDC mics I have tried  is not symmetrical enough to allow for decent MS recordings, let alone double-MS for subsequent processing into 5.1 surround.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I don't record music but soundscapes, at sound pressure levels usually between 20 and 50 dB below what you'd get in a mjsic concert situation. Given the rather low sensitivity of ribbon mics and their susceptibility to wind noise, I'm more than a little sceptical as to their usability for this purpose.

You are right. Ribbons would not work for you.

There is only one I can think of - the Ambient ATE 208 EMESSER.

Very small, close to Schoeps in quality and made specially for Ambient by MBHO in Germany.

Comes as a kit and is less than half the price of the Schoeps.  I think it's about £600 in the UK.

It's the least expensive single-diaphragm condenser fig-8 on the market, as far as I am aware, but still up there with the expensve ones in quality.
