Topic: SBD recording with Zoom H2

Hello guys, i will need a help if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated. I'm having Zoom H2, and there is a chance to tape a hardcore show from SBD, what do you think it's the best way to do it, to connect Zoom H2 with SBD, through the Line In or the Mic input? ANd do i have to use any other special settings?

Line in, but you MUST have an attenuator.  12dB is suitable.  It is due to the strange design of the Zoom which can't cope with pro line levels.  If you don't have the attenuator, the result will be horribly distorted, regardless of gain setting.

If you can't get a hold a a suitable attenuator you'll need to forget the soundboard and record with mics. Even a recording with Zoom's internal mics would be better than the soundboard.

thanks guys for the quick respond, never heard before anything attenuator, is there a link or something to suggest me so i can have a look to it so i can search and order it?

If the sound guy is willing to work with you, see if you can get him to boost the guitars in your mix, assuming it is possible on that board.  I'm guessing you're not talking about a huge venue; if you don't do that, you will probably just have a recording of drums and vocals.

And if he is willing to do that for you, he should also be able turn down the level of your feed so it does not distort the line-input stage of your Zoom even without external attenuators (I would think, never having used one myself).

Are you all set for cables? The SBD is likely to have XLR ouputs, or possibly 1/4", or maybe RCA. When I'm not certain, I bring all three, or an RCA cable with 1/4" and XLR adapters.

When I tape off the  board I'm usually offered an output that doesn't have any level control - a tape out is most common.

when i get sbd patches now i always ask the soudman to set my level at 50% and the level is perfect. on cheaper mixing consoles with tape outs you will need pads.
