Try it using WAV rather than Direct WAV

8/6/98 all were the same

i know for a fact that yamar and twist had digi zaps in the first fileset, and someone on etree confirmed a glitch in free

i kinda remember seeing this problem before a few years back, and using different options for cdwav like this solved it.

tried to search for that old thread to no avail

weird stuff.

You're using the latest versions of both CD Wave and TLH.  I've never had an issue like this (using the same software).  Also, I've always used "direct wav" output.

Is the issue even with CD Wave?  or is it with the conversion to FLAC?  With CD Wave, you are outputting WAV files.  Do those look fine?  Or are they messed up at that stage?  If they're messed up before conversion to FLAC, we know the issue is with CD Wave.  If the CD Wave wav file output is fine, then we know the issue is with the conversion to FLAC.  With TLH, you can run the st5 checksums (aka the "shntool md5") on the WAV files.  this should be identical to the Flac FFP, as both only look at the audio portion of the file.  if you do this on the WAV files after CD Wave, and compare it to the FLAC FFP, we'll know if there is an issue with the FLAC conversion or not, which will really help to pinpoint the problem.

It might be worthwhile to do some checks on the health of your hard drive and RAM.  something like a bad piece of RAM might cause intermittent errors like you're seeing with 7/31/98.

I had the same problem using an older laptop and found that my HDD was very fragmented - defrag helped - also one of my dimm's was a little flakey

In the end I got rid of that laptop and picked up one that was a few years newer (the original laptop was 7 years old at that point)

What happens if you let CDWave convert to flac? Do the files have the same "zaps" after conversion?

16 or 24 bit?
Are you dragging and dropping files or going thru menu on TLH?  reason I ask is on my win7 puter for some reson I get errors when I drag and drop yet not one issue when I go thru the menu to import files for decoding.

24 bit in cd wav you need to check the box "use alternate 24 bit format.

if this is errors on folder have you tried file individually?  Defrag, is great idea?  Is there enough room in temp folder for conversions to happen IE: is your C: drive almost full?

some intereesting responses in this thread

whole lotta variables

unfortunately i didnt save the intermediate .wav files from cdwav output. i dont typically use flac output from cdwav as id rather use tlh

really odd that tlh acts differently with drag and drop vs dialogue...

is there an easy wav rejoin program? i think the quick check would be to rejoin the tracks into a single wav and checkit against the original uncut wav via checksum or inversion

Only if you use Direct WAV.  If you use WAV it automatically reads the frequency and resolution of the WAV files.

No real need to save the intermediate wave files if you save the splits as a cue sheet. Usually a 2KB or less text file that will allow you to open the unedited file with the splits (basically if you open the .cue file cdwave will ask if you want to open the associated wave file) so no need to rejoin tracks, just open the cue file with splits, then remove all splits and you should have the original single file.

I asked what happened if you used CDWave to save as flac in order to see if the problem occurred before TLH was even opened. Open CDWave, open original file, split, save cue sheet then convert to flac. Then open the flac files in your favorite editor to see if the "zaps" were introduced by CD Wave. If they aren't there then the problem lies further down your work chain.

perhaps were not understanding each other. i do save the cue sheet (which is why i was able to easily try another setting and compare results). but i dont understand how a cuesheet will let me rejoin split wavs to let me compare them with the original wav to assure no artifacts

you can also easily rejoin WAV files with shntool.

see this thread for some more details:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=144409.msg1860482#msg1860482

another command line option is SoX.  but you probably already have shntool installed, because it gets installed with TLH.
