A UA-5 is a very solid unit, especially with the busman mod. everyone i know that has one has liked it to loved it, however ive never had one. People run UA-5's with Schoeps and extremely expensive mics, so that says something. but its all preference.

I know the Ua5 is solid...just concerned with the file splits and stuff. I'm thinking once I upgrade I can use the Microtracker II for lower profile stuff.

once upon time the UA5 was referred to as the poor-man's V3
the MTII had problems but many/most seem to have been addressed with firmware updates

I have an Oade W-modded UA5 and the original MT2496 both of which get occasional use - sometimes even running UA5>MT. I liked the modded unit so much I bought a second unit which was sold as stock but I did find a note on the bottom that it had been digi-modded but I haven't taken the time to verify.

with that disclosure I think you'll be happy with the UA-5

I know the Ua5 is solid...

IMO, the only "concern" about the UA5 is its incompatibility with some 24bit recorders...

Otherwise its a great Pre/ADC...

Personally I'd consider a hd-p2 or unmodded dr-100mkii

I just don't trust the microtrack at all

You can find used hd-p2's for around $350 or $250 with some kind of issue (digital in won't lock, etc)

Modded versions sell in the $400-450 range

The idea of using an All in one is always a plus

I would also consider a tinybox > M10 setup before I would through a micro tracker into the mix

I had a mt1 and never had a problem at all
I think most problems people had where related to it locking onto a digital signal. You def need to have everything hooked up and the ua5 on before turning on the mt

I also think the mt2 has automatic file splits
The 1 would juts stop or you could hit stop start fast and miss like 6 seconds but again I am pretty sure mt2 has automatic split

I would try and get a battery pack for the mt though, I never had long run times Just on the internal

The mt2 does have automatic splits but they are not gap less - from what I have read they are a few seconds or so

Been running this combo as my 2nd stage rig for a while now.  Never had any issues, latest firmware for the MT2 fixed all referenced issues.  Lots of haters of the MT2.  Great little bit bucket, got 2 just for this purpose.

I've had an old W-mod UA5 and it works and sounds great with several recorders (JB3, Microtrack II and now Marantz PMD661), however I had issues with the MTII recording in 24/48.  You never knew if the file would changeover and not just stop during 24 bit operation.   16 bit was never an issue and the file changeover was never a problem.   I used SPDIF in with the MTII and now with the 661.  I have no problems at all with the PMD 661.    Get an external 5V battery for the MTII as the internal battery might last an hour if you're lucky.
