Before I release this to the world...
« on: February 24, 2018, 01:01:57 PM »
I'd appreciate anyone's insight as to what it is that I'm hearing in this clip and why it's there at all.

Duo set up, guitar Lt, drums Rt.

Countryman B3 in a 6" A-B (hat) formation on a table top, 6'-8' from instruments. > TinyBox/High gain > M10
(I applied a bit of Ozone Imager to this in post... I've been using this VST a lot and don't seem to get this feeling by it.)

What I hear is a sort of swimming of the cymbols between channels. It happens frequently, not just where this clip was taken.

Are my ears failing? Do I need to place a YS offering of all my gear?

TIA

Sounds to me like at least one of two things is/are at play here:

1. You have some form of automatic gain reduction or a limiting circuit on. Most likely because your levels are too hot.

2. Artifacts of mp3 file compression. This file is encoded at 160 kbps, if you absolutely MUST compress files down to mp3 I would recommend shooting for a minimum of 256 kbps.

There may also be more at play, but on a cursory listen both of these effects are what my brain is hearing.

Good start, thanks.
The MP3 was saved at the highest VBR option that Audition provided. I would save higher via CDwave editor.

I do run the M10 limiter. Is this at play? I've run close this way often and don't recall getting  this effect.

I heard this phenomenon first while editing in Audition so it could be the limiter or my post application of Imager.  Porting to MP3 was for ease of sharing only...

I'll keep my ear on this and see what I can turn up. Thanks for the input.

Just looking at the waveform (and listening as well), I don't think it's the limiter, which acts more like an AGC at high volumes.

Was there a PA? Could it just be some bizarro mix in the room? And do you hear the "swimming" effect before applying Ozone Imager as well?

^ PA was right above the table hung from the ceiling in the center of the room. Not part of the reproduction process as such, just a vocal mic.

I've gone back to the basic files and remastered them in the mixdown mode. What I have done differently is I left out the slight reverb and excitation available in the "Effects | Special | Mastering" tool and exported it only as a 16/44 stereo file. There might have been a bit of pan dialed in that went unnoticed before that, during this rehash, was reset to null.

Anyway, I don't hear any of the swim that I sampled here so I'm going with it.  Thanks all for your comments and suggestions.

It's definitely a compression issue. You can clearly hear the attack and release of the compressor around the kick drum
