I was searching for definitive information regarding the difference between the two formats of writable BluRay media, and found a bulletin from Verbatim which explains a lot.
It's on the web as a PDF, so I thought I'd share it here in case they ever remove it because it's a nice clear explanation.
I had to break it in pieces to keep the file sizes in range for this site.

The wording of the first page past the title page is as follows:


What is BD-R LTH type?
• It is just another type of BD-R, specified in Spring 2008 by Blu-ray Disc Alliance
• Recording layer is different:
• First type of BD-R is made of inorganic material
• Signal changes polarity from High-to-Low (HTL)
• AZO BD-R is made of organic material
• Signal changes polarity from Low-to-High (LTH)
• BDA states mandatory use of wording „BD-R LTH type“on packaging and disc label

If you are buying BD-R media, you should only use HTL discs which have great long-term stability.

LTH discs should be avoided because the organic dyes degrade which causes data corruption.

Here is a list of disc manufacturers with manufacturing processes. Note that the same manufacturers often produce both HTL and LTH discs - you need to make sure you are buying the specific Media Type ID listed.

I used to read DVD-R codes with a bit of Mac software called DVD Media Inspector. It still works for DVD-R, and is still available online, here, but has not been updated in a long time, from version 1.2.0 of 2013.

Today I found how to read BD-R or DVD codes here:

in Mac OS, go to the Terminal app (command line shell) and simply type the following with a disc in the reader:
drutil status

the Media ID field will list your brand and code!

I've got a few remaining RITEK BD2 discs which are HTL. w00t! But confirmed, these JVC-AM S6L are the LTH discs. :-(
