Running omni's onstage
« on: June 11, 2004, 10:07:44 AM »
Would it be a dumb idea to run a set of Schoeps omnis (MK2S caps) onstage on a Kwon NOS bar? There have been a few instances when I couldve run omni's onstage, but because of space restrictions I could only run one stand and not space the omni's out. So in those instances Ive just run the MK4's on the ORTF bar instead. Will I get enough separation running the omni's 90 deg. 30 cm? The one time I did run onstage omni's spaced about 3-4' it came out sounding amazing. I have a chance to tape tomorrow night and I may just run the MK2S's onstage with the NOS bar to see what I end up with unless someone can convince me that it will be a bad idea.
Any thoughts?

why not?  the only way to learn is to experiment.  hell, even if 20 people say don't do it, do it anyway.  you never know until you try.  Good luck!

As I understand it, the closer the mics are to the sound source the smaller the distance needs to be to capture a stereo image/soundstage.  I say go for it - I bet it turns out awfully nice!

If you run the omnis like that you wont get much if any stereo image. I would spilt them even if its only a couple of feet

yeah, i remember reading at DPA's website that the omnis should be 3 feet apart for every foot from the sound source to get an ideal stereo image.  sounds like it is ridiculously far apart to me under any non-onstage taping with omnis.

On stage/ stage lip  I've given the Healy method a try and always reccomend it.  Caps at 180 degrees and go with the width of your head.  Using a NOS bar will probabley get you the same results.  The image was very wide and detailed.  It just wasn't width but also depth was a factor, drums in the back ect.

I've been testing a new one.  This uses two Omnis.  Put one in your shoe and put the other one in your girl's purse.  Set the shoe and the purse on the stage at 5.5 ft apart.  The image is sick!.  Bass is primo.  Highs suffer a bit, but I'm still working out the bugs.  I've got some more ideas too.  Want to play around with some figure 8's

I've used omnis on stage a few times.  Wasn't too thrilled with the results.  I've been much happier with cards x/y.  If you do use them, make sure they are away from the crowd at the lip of the stage.  Once I had a very *enthusiastic* fan right in front of one of my omnis and she ruined the recording.

I like using omni's any chance I get, I'd definitely give it a shot Brian.

one thing you can try is getting a second NOS bar, use both in the shockmount and you've got your stereo seperation  :)
