Recording app for android
« on: July 23, 2025, 05:26:30 PM »
Finally giving a phone based right a shot. What are people using for recording on android? I heard good stuff about MOTIV but appears to be restricted to shure mics only? I'll be mics > Xbox > 3.5 to USB c adaptor > phone

I have also tried many apps, and it is true that Shure MOTIV can only be used when you use Shure MOTIV microphones (like MV88). I am plugging in a separate microphone via a USB-C adapter and then connecting it to Easy Voice Recorder.

Thank you, exactly the information I needed. Can Easy Voice record in WAV and monitor levels?

With a direct USB-C to 3.5mm jack input I believe you will only be able to record in mono on a smartphone. And the sound quality will depend on the (usually very poor) phone preamp.
Zoom M4 Mictrak -> DPA4060 or MKH416
Roland R-07 -> FEL Communications Clippy EM172 Omnis or pair of RØDE Lavaliers.
iPhone 14 -> Shure MV88 or Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset

There are no mic preamps or ADCs for recording from external devices in smartphones, unless it's an older phone with a TRRS jack which would accept a mono analog mic input on a set of wired earbuds. The mic preamps and converters for what is being discussed here will be in the external interface you connect.

For Android, I know many people have had success with this app in the past though I have never used it myself. The key points are: (1) you can use any USB class-compliant interface such as those you would connect to a PC, and (2) it bypasses any limitations or additional processing done when recording through Android the 'normal' way.

I have used the same developer's playback app for many years, which also can directly stream to your external playback device.

I believe you are wrong.
Admittedly my experience is only with iPhones - but the Lightning or USB-C input can easily be adapted to 3.5mm TRRS input with a simple converter and used with a mic/headset, headphones etc. It seems this is what OP and others are talking about when mentioning a "3.5 to usb-c adapter" in his first post.
(i imagine similar to this: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MW2Q3AM/A/usb-c-to-35-mm-headphone-jack-adapter)
It has no preamp or audio interface build in. It is intended for a headset with mic to use for taking calls and substitutes the old trrs input. But you can connect a microphone directly to that with a TRRS to TRS adapter so there must be a build in converter/preamp (and PIP) in the smartphone - how else would it work?
I have recorded countless times in mono this way with a lav mic.

If you want to record stereo you need an audio interface (like Røde AI-Micro, or that which is build into an MV88 etc.)

the adc and preamp are in the usbc to 1/8" adapter, not in the phone.  So the interface you choose makes a difference.

There is no AD converter in the adapter I link to above (yet it works). How do you explain that?

I explain it by saying you are incorrect in your assumption.  The apple usbc to 1/8" is an active converter. It has to be, with the way usb c works.

Really - an adc and a preamp as well? I would not mind being educated.
