Topic: Quick Question for 4.7k Mod - Plug In Power Voltage?

Using the FR-AV2 and tried to run Plug In Power with the AT853s that have a 4.7k mod. The 32 bit float has some nasty hiss in the recording. Did I overcook the mics? I set the plug in power to 5V. But there was an option for 2.5V as well. Nothing else. Could that have been why I have such bad hiss/noise floor on the recording? I did crank the gain up. But didn't think that would affect the tape so much.

I run 4.7k-modded AT853s with a 12v battery box all the time with no problem. Chris at Sound Professionals also confirmed they can handle 12v.

What was your recording peaking at before you cranked the gain up?

hm, this is weird. Noticed the same thing with my AT853s when run with a Deity PR2's PIP, which is 5V. I wonder if that's an issue at this voltage specifically? The recording turned out wonderfully, but it did have that hiss you describe.

You underpowered them, rather than overpowering them.  The mics are designed for over 9V of power, not the more standard 2.5 or 5v levels that mics for stage body packs use.

The issue ended up being some bad rechargeable AAs (so maybe it was underpowered after all). Eneloops and Nuons have stopped this issue.
