Soundboard access
« on: October 04, 2025, 09:52:48 AM »
I’m going to a concert this week where I’ll have access to the soundboard. If I just bring a digital card with me for obtaining the data is that adequate or should I bring a device that accepts the output from the soundboard? If I did with an H for essential be too much or just enough? Which wire should I bring for connection to the soundboard? And is there any special formatting for the cards that might be able to attached to the soundboard? I’m new to this, but really anxious to get good sound.

Do you know what kind of sound board you'll be working with?  I work extensively with the X32 and M32, and both have the ability to do a two track recording via a USB stick.  Some may have SD card access, as it's an optional accessory for the boards.  The new Behringer Wing has the SD card built in.  If possible, 32gig FAT32 formatted is what I would be prepared for as the x/m32 don't necessarily like larger cards.

The H4 essential has two xlr inputs that would be fine for an analog output from the board.  I would have no issues using some extra outputs to give you a signal.  If the band has a large number of monitor mixes though, it might be challenging.  I'd be prepared with a pair of both XLRF -> XLRM and 1/4" TRS -> XLRM cables just in case.

Good luck!

Note the H4 essential has combo XLR/TRS inputs, with the XLR set for mic level and the TRS for line level input, just to throw another wrinkle in there.

I've probably taped a couple hundred shows at this point.

Of those:
Maybe two have offered me recordings by SD cards
One board had RCA output
The rest has been XLR
