Sony Walkman not charging / no icon on computer
« on: April 05, 2026, 12:21:11 AM »
Hey all,

I think it might be time to replace my Sony Walkman, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a possible repair.

It's at LEAST four years old, possibly a little more. I can't remember when I bought it. It's had a lot of daily use in my delivery van at work. About two years ago the 3.5mm headphone output jack broke and I've had to use it via bluetooth ever since, which worked fine. I've noticed that the battery ran down every day, after six hours or so of use, so I'd charge it nightly on my iMac. About a week or so ago I added some new shows in the evening while it was plugged in (It charges over night) and the next day I noticed that even after charging all night it only had one bar on the battery scale. I used it only in the morning and then turned it off.

When I got home and plugged it in I noticed that the Sony icon was no longer showing up on my desktop and it would not boot up when I had it plugged in to the USB output. All I would get was the white wavy line, and sometimes the red low battery indicator. It's not charging at all now and I'm not sure if it's the battery or the cable. About two months ago one of our dachshund puppies ate through part of the original Sony cable and I had to get an aftermarket charging cable on the internet. The new cable worked fine but now I'm having problems. I guess I could try ordering another aftermarket cable, but it could be that the battery is just toast.

Can the battery be replaced or should I just replace the Walkman? I REALLY don't want to spend $400 on a new one. This one was I think $250 when I bought it new, but because of Trump's tariffs the price is a lot more now.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

ONT.

After charging continuously for two days the battery finally came up enough to show the icons on the desktop!!! I'm offloading the 13 gigs of internal storage to make a saftey copy on the desktop, so I can re-add those shows later if I get a new one.
If I do get a new one I'll just swap the micro SD card over.

So I guess the (aftermarket) charging cable is not the problem, the internal Walkman battery is failing. Can it be replaced or should I just buy a new Walkman?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Seems possible to replace, Googling "sony walkman DAP battery replacement" turned up batteries and some videos, though it may depend on your exact model number.
DPA4061 HEB -> R-09 / AT943 -> CA-UGLY -> Edirol R-09
AKG CK63 -> nBob actives -> Baby NBox -> Edirola R-09/Tascam DR2d
AKG CK63 -> AKG C460B -> Zoom F8/Tascam DR-680MKII
Line Audio CM4 > Tascam Dr60d/Zoom F3
Line Audio CM4/Superlux S502/Samson C02/iSK Little Gem/Sennheiser E609/Shure SM57 -> Zoom F8/DR-680MKII (multitracked band recordings)

Usually the model type is written somewhere on the bottom of the unit. Otherwise make a picture and search for it with Google lense on your smartphone. Shouldn't be too difficult to do some research about the model.
After that, google the model + battery replacement. Like suggested before, it's most likely that the battery can be replaced. Good luck!

According to SONY, it could be the charging cable, they say it needs to have data capabilities to charge, which not all USB-C cables have:

I ran into this same problem with my Tascam DR100, wouldn't charge wit USB-C wall wart, had to use my PC, ended up buying a Tascam power supply.
