Taping @ Nissan Pavillion
« on: June 24, 2004, 11:09:16 AM »
I'm not at all familiar with this venue other than basic facts...  I'll be in Orch 2 Row H for the DMB show there next month and was hoping I could get some recording tips.  I'm wondering if my location will be good for recording.  Am I too close in the center?  Should I try to trade out to the side closer to a stack?  Also, what mic angle would be best (cardioids)?  Since it's a pavilion I'm assuming it doesn't have walls...

Seating chart: http://www.nissanpavilion.com/flash/launchwindow-main.html

Thanks!

you can tape from there...only problem is you are in front of the video camera in the center section and they will force you to run head height....otherwise you can trade tix with someone for stack seats...

That is center section, near where my seats are. I'm planning on trading to the side b/c of the center rule. I will probably run cards XY up there.
Out of the game … for now?

Well maybe I'll see you there... I'd love to see that Halo/Powerbook setup in action.  Would any seat in Orch 1/3 be decent for recording?  Or is there a particular "sweet spot?"

contrary to popular belief, it IS possible to run head height dead center from a DMB show and for it to turn out well. I've done... *has to count* 3 or 4 that way and they sound great. The first show I ever taped I did and it sounds like ass, but that was DMB @ 3 rivers, fucking 4" puddles and torrential rain. but hey, at least i taped Ben and Ozo and they sound better than DMB, ugh.

depends on the crowd...the DMB crowds have some of the most chatty, whistling, "I love you Dave" screamers ever, who could give 2 shits how the tape turns out...of course until they get it after, and are like "Dude, this thing sucks...I need the 853 source 2 feet from the stacks"

I've been pretty lucky. The crowds around me (2nd row Sandstone = complete dead air, 2x at Antioch from about the i think 7/9th row?) I asked prior to the show to yell *away* and all of them were cool about it. And some hooked me up that night (which is why Antioch is.. rather fuzzy  :-[ )

you think I could clamp off ya Pat?  I'm not positive yet, but I am looking to go to this one.  The tickets I'm tryin to get are in 103 I think, like 11th or 12th row.

I'd be more than willing to give clamps if Pat can't.

It says no recording equipment or backpacks.  Will they make exceptions for the DMB concert?

Just about every ticket I've ever bought for a show says no recording equipment...I think it's a blanket thing they put up there just so they can say no if there's any hint that it might not be cool with the performer... :P

There's gonna be at least 10 tapers there.  Don't even worry about it, you'll get your stuff in just fine.
