Topic: Newbie needs help with small gaps in first lineage

I’m extremely new to this so I started by reading a lot in this forum to learn more about what I need to start my taping ”career”; mainly stealth in smaller venues, but the rig shouldn’t be useless at bigger venues and outdoor gigs. I know I’ll get a JB3, but I’m not sure about the rest. Could anyone help me fill the gaps? You should get the gist of my budget through my questions.

1. I think I want Sound Professionals SP-CMC mics; perhaps -2 or -4, but I could easily get talked into buying -6 or -8 if it’s worth the extra money. I don’t know about the difference. Which one do you recommend and why?

2. I guess I need a battery box, preferably Sound Professionals SP-SPSB. Which model do you recommend and why? Do I need bass roll-off and level control option?

3. How about a pre-amp/ADC? I checked out AD-20 and it was a bit too expensive. Is it important? Does it make a big difference?

Theoretical lineage so far: SP-CMC-X > SP-SPSB-X > (Pre-amp/ADC?) > JB3

4. Do I need to buy any cables to connect these things, or are they included?

5. Can I plug the JB3 into a soundboard? What do I need to do it... besides permission? A huge amount of different cables or are all soundboards the same? Is the pre-amp involved here?

1. I love my 2s. They are perfect for stealthing. Other people will have differing ideas of course. They are a little sensitive to wind so probably not ideal for outdoors, although I've made a couple of outdoor recordings which were fine. High winds - forget it.

2. the 1. Bass roll off - definitely. Level control - waste of money. Remember the clip.

3. Apparently it makes a small difference. Never tried one and of course it adds to the bulk when stealthing. I'm perfectly happy without one.

5. Never tried it. I think there are three possible cables - try and find out beforehand which output your favourite SBD uses (or buy all three, inexpensive). I've got the links somewhere..someone else help out here please. Attenuators required?

6. Other equipment: a micro maglite, earplugs, extra battery. Dose of luck.

cmc-2 (at831 caps) is $119 and cmc-4 (at853 caps) is $169. imho, for $50 bucks more, you'll get a much fuller sounding recording.

i've never ran the SP versions, but have ran the AT831b set and currently run modified AT853a (basically they're AT853rx now).

to my ears, there's a fair amount of sonic difference between the 2 AT caps.  the AT853s are flatter, more responsive and fuller in the low end.

Could some please point out the cables I need to connect the JB3 to a soundboard? I can buy them from Sound Professionals, can't I?

All soundboards are different, so you'll need a shitload of cables. Most common are XLR, RCA or 1/4" outs, so you'd need double male connectors of each to a stereo mini-plug. Might be worth checking out the boards where you're most typically going to be taping and get those first rather than just buying all three sets, but it's better to be prepared for everything...
