youre not retarted alex. they are suring your actual ip address. when you use a router. you use Network Address Translation (NAT). this uses private subnetted addresses instead of your acyual one cause you onlyu paid for one but are using multiple ip addresses. you need to set the 192.168.1.xxx as your ip address that forwards ports.

Okay, maybe Im not forwarding the ports to my machine, on the linksys page, where you forward the ports, it has a space for the IP That looks like this: 192.168.1__ with a blank space to  fill it in.  The IP on this page: www.whatismyip.com looks nothing like that. Am I retarded? What am I doing wrong???

yeah, thats the IP going into the router.  Coming out of each port of the router is another address for each computer plugged in.  They will have those first series of numbers and then something like 100 or 101... thats the blank you have to fill.  I was thinking if you have AOL mess you can easily check it by right clicking in a mess window and Insert > Ip addresss and it will look like that.

Here's how you do it.
1) Right click the 2 little monitors icon (wireless network connection )in the right corner of the screen and select "Status"
2) Under the "support" tab write down the numbers for IP address and Default gateway.
3) type the default gateway number into your address line of your internet browser
4) the username and password are the same: admin
5) select the applications and gaming tab
6) in the 1st line type in

applic              start      end     protocol          ip address        enable
------                -------      -----     -----------          --------------        ---------
anyname          6881     6999     tcp              xxx.xxx.x.___      check

the last three numbers of the ip address should match the ip address that you wrote down in step 1 (the address for the computer that you want to forward these ports to).


If you are running norton internet security you will have do something similar in that program as well.

what does the "protocol" actually do?  I have it selected as BOTH and it opens up the ports on BT.

select: personal firewall / configure
Advanced / general
Add/ permit / next
Connections from other computers / next
any computer/next
tcp / only ports from selcted range/ add
port range / start 6881 end 6999 / next
next
make up a name / next
select locations/ next
finish
make sure the rule is at the top of the list of other rules already there.

On bt.etree, I  you can see part of your ip address in the peer details list. It will show your port number in parens if you are firewalled. Plus, the port will not be in the right range if you are fw. Your addy shows up in red numbers.

Onother thing to look out for is the windoz software firewall. If that is enabled, the hardware forwarding is only half the work.

But, it always takes a long time to BT shows.

you can open up a port on AOL to do this. 

My IM > Edit Options > Edit Preferences > File Transfer

Then enter the port you wish to use and make sure its opened on your router.
