JB3 Locked up during recording question
« on: December 12, 2004, 10:01:49 PM »
I read the FAQ and found this.

[180] If I run out of power will the NJB3 shut down gracefully, saving my recording?
Running on internal power, the NJB3 will shut down gracefully, saving your recording.  Running external power, it will not.

I was running the JB3 using external power, but this question/answer doesnt totally fit my problem.

Here it is, any help is greatly appreciated.
During my taping of the second set of The Recipe on Sat night, I noticed after the encore that my JB3 was locked up. By locked up I mean, none of the buttons worked and it was frozen on the recording screen. 15mins or so went by before I noticed it. I didnt notice right away becauase when I glanced at it, the levels were present and all looked well. As I said, none of the bottons would work, so I couldnt press "stop" to save the recording. Even the power button wouldnt work. The only thing I could do as a last resort was to unplug the JB3 from the external power source. I was pissed, but nothing else worked.  So the question is, the JB3 had 1hr 0mins and 3sec of recording time elapsed. Is there anyway that it might still have been written to the internal HD? It does NOT show up in the recording section of the music library.
I'm sure I'm screwed, but wanted to ask anyway if there was some way to maybe retrieve that 1hr plus of the recording.
Also, I have a 20g JB3, and only about 20 percent of the HD was full when the error occured.
Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA.
Jim

What makes it even worse was that I spent more time blocking for my stand that was being bashed around all night by w00ks and drunk old women than actually enjoying the show, so I was extra pissed at the error. This is also the first time I've had any tech problems w/ my JB3.

This has happend to me twice. Once because of the heat at bonaroo (los lobos) and then on the last night durring trey for the orchestra set for what reason I dont know... As far as I can tell, the JB3 is very pickey. If it doesnt like its surroundings, its a bitch! Maybe because it was too humid durring Trey? I donno, but that is pretty much the only thing I dont like about the jb3 is you are at the mercy of a HD...

Yeah, the bad luck finally hit me.  The JB3 didnt feel any warmer than normal, I also had it set up slightly elevated to it could ventilate.  Not sure what happened......

So am I S.O.L. then with trying to recover it?

have you tried going into rescue mode and cleaning up the hard drive? if not you may want to try this and you may find the recording in tact afterwards.

good luck

yeah, so far, maybe ive been blessed, but i ahvent had any real problems liek that w/ mine, i DO format after every show once its flac'd and burned to disc, and thus far, that has worked great

the one thing i have to say about the jb3 is, dont rush it, let it take its time to power up/down, and keep it formatted when using it to record :)

do a disc cleanup every couple months or so, and you should hopefully be problem free :)

I had a similar problem at RockyGrass this past year.  What I found in my testing:  the external power plug I used with the JB3 didn't fit perfectly, and a small nudge would cause a very brief lapse in power insufficient to shut it down, but sufficient enough to lock it up.  I hacked my JB3 power cable so now I use the stock plug and no problems since (though I haven't used an external power source much since swapping plugs).

My recommendation:

[1] Use internal batts for all but festivals
[2] Ensure a proper fitting power plug

Never experienced the "heat issue", so if that's the cause, well...I'm no help!

nice brian, i bet that would do it, because in my testing, when the jb3 isnt powered up/shutdown properly, it loves to lock up, but YMMV ;) so power cutting in/out would def cause that, thats like improperly shutting it down :)

I still have to try the rescue mode thing, but I just wanted to add to this that I was using the stock JB3 power cable.  I've used it a lot for almost a year and this is the first problem, so hopefully it was just one of those things.....
Thanks to all,
Jim

i had a similar issue - only mine involved the fact that the aftermarket plug tip broke off inside the JB3's hole, and the plastic was securely stuck at the bottom of the post inside the little hole.

I have hacked off the plastic end on all my 4.5 and 5 v power cables to ensure that any of them will work with any of my 5 v items (JB3s and my digi-cam).
