ORTF with AT831 cardiods stealth mics?
« on: April 30, 2005, 05:08:40 AM »
hi, i am going to some gigs next week and want to try out something with a different mic setup.

i have a pair of AT831 cardiod mics that u used to wear in 'binaural' style, facing forward. Good results, but i want to see if i can get more out of it. Could ORTF style help? If so, i would like to build a tiny stand to put on a balcony/or tape to a wooden post. any clue or tips?

I don't know the answer, but I'm running the same mics AB Stereo setup and was planning to try either ORTF or DIN at the Umphrey's McGee show next Sat in San Fran.
Here's What I have been running:

Here's my ORTF "t-bar". If I put the clips in over the area that says ORTF and have the mic capsules at the lines, It is pretty close to ORTF without needing to bust out a protractor and ruler. Below it is my old 2 foot "t-bar".

..Sorry didn't get a chance to run ORTF for the Umphrey's McGee show.
See http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=41847.0 for the explanation.

Nice use for a ruler!  In this picture...

I think your "ORTF" lines are more like 70 degrees than 110.  ie: set it up as pictured and turn the mics 90 degrees outward, and they'll be in ORTF in the other direction.  The protractor might help here.  ;)

Regardless, 70 degrees will be a useful angle especially in clubs.

would this help?

My only gripe with this, is your mics are almost at 180° , not 110°

My only gripe with this, is your mics are almost at 180 (who know the "alt" + number combo for degrees?), not 110

this is a photoshop mockup this is not the acuall thing. thi mics can be taped down resultin in a better angle.
the show is over go home please.

A little more like this:
Aah, that makes sense now, sure.  Really inventive use of office supplies here, folks.

That is an interesting idea to use the clamp.  At first it didn't make much sense, but once I pulled out a clip I realized how great it could be!  I am always trying to improve my stealthing setup and if I'm able to clamp onto something (if along a rail or even cloth along a wall) that could be an interesting idea.  I have seen a few shots of using a ruler for ORTF and even though I may not be able to use a ruler in an any upcoming show it would be good to have just incase.

Thanks for the ideas all!
