CD storage options?

I'm currently using a combination of Binders for audio and spindles for the lossless discs. I like some of those other methods though. I may consider changing since spindles are a bit of a pain for me to find things on the rare occasions I need the flac files.

Could I ask why? I archive as FLAC (mostly on CDR), but also have an audio copy around if I want to listen to the show. FLAC = perfect copies possible, Audio = DAE, flaws possible, apparently even when using EAC.

Not WAV in audio format, WAV in data format - no DAE required.  Still perfect copies, but better error recovery since a given amount of physical damage will impact a smaller portion of the WAV file, and a larger portion of the compressed FLAC file.

They pretty much answered the question, but my issue was that I have a number of FLAC files that can't be converted back to .wav anymore...  I suspect it is because a peice of the data got fucked up (drive corruption, I believe) - causing the data not to match the header.  When I discovered this stuff, a few weeks ago, I decided to go to actual audio CD-Rs, for a number of reasons.... My experience at my job (data archiving, kinda...) tells me that certain formats can fall by the wayside, and while I don't forsee that happening with FLAC or WAV, I see it as a possibility.  So, I put them on as audio cd's for the worst case scenario as I saw it - that I'd have to do a cd -> cd copy.

But, I just ordered an R-1, so what will probably happen from now on is a .wav data file on a dvd-r.  With media being relatively cheap these days, I don't see the need to compress files for archiving, given the problems that I've run into w/ FLACs before.

My $.02...  having the flacs but not being able to decompress them totally sucks.

I'm getting ready to build my own, but then I have a complete woodshop in my garage and build beds on the side, so building CD racks isn't that hard for me... If you're not inclined to build your own storage, you should check out Unlce Jon's Workshop. I have two of his DAT racks (yep, sometimes even I buy furniture), and they are great. I highly recommend them.

careful with binders, the material that touches the information side of the disc can sometimes cause scratchng.  i've had discs stored in binders before I switched to plastic and paper cases and I found that some of my discs wouldn't play because of being rubbed against that fibrous material.  FWIW

I have my factory CDs in their jewel boxes in the biggest spinner I could find that holds about 1500.

My CD-Rs are in sleeves in a wooden drawer unit.  I've been switching from paper sleeves over to Univenture sleeves favored by DJs.  They can hold program info and multiple discs in about the same space as paper/tyvex.  I only use the "safety" ones that have special material to separate the discs from the sleeve.

Here's what I do--and it answers multiple issues.

I FLAC and then double archive everything.  Then, if an error does occur, then you know you still have the second disc as backup.  That, and FLAC usually takes up less than half the space of WAV, so there is no more money invested in media.

No loss at all, no more media used than when saving as WAV data discs.

That does suck.  And you're sure that a small screwed up portion of the FLAC file screws up the whole thing?  No way around that?  That does make me worry a bit about my FLAC collection...

I've been changing how I archive my JB3 recordings, and ended up triple or quadruple archive:

1. FLAC unedited + edited single track show + CD Wave cue, on Kodak CDR, or DVDR if its too big.

2. Tracked audio (normally this gets a bit of play in the home stereo, or the wife's car, before being retired).

3. Tracked FLAC + text file + ffp (whether I seed it or not).

4. (Optional) Seed it to the masses (or in most cases the handful of people that like my obscure heavy rock recordings   ).

I think I'm going to go the sleeves in a tupperware container route, is it worth spending the extra money on Tyvek sleeves over the paper ones?
