My first PC as DAW, need some guidance...
« on: January 23, 2006, 05:15:56 PM »
Ok, I've been a Mac guy forever. My powerbook is starting to show signs of age and I'm not able to drop the money for a new mac right now so I've decided to get a PC. My mac will still be used for my everyday computing/graphics work, but my audio needs to be separate.

I'm getting a DELL refurb, 5150, p4 3ghz, 160g hd, 1g ram, 16x dual Layer DVD.

My plan is to use this as both a DAW and a music server. I have an Maudio Audiophile USB external sound card that I'll be using analog out to my system for both 16 and 24 bit listening. I'll also be adding another hd, 300g, as well. I'll use this to dump my 24bit recordings from my 671 for tracking and conversion to flac. I'll also be loading all my old DATs and shows from cd as well for conversion to flac.

Basically the idea is to have a dedicated system for editing, storing and listening. This machine will NOT be hooked up to the internet. I have my mac for that sort of thing. My plan was to use winamp for listening and wavelab or cdwave for tracking and what not. Are there any recommended pc audio programs that are cheap?

What I'm looking for here is any suggestions for a complete pc noob for the type of thing I'm trying to do. Hardware wise, I think I'm all set, but I know very little about windows software and what not. Also any tips on setting up a dedicated audio pc would be extremely helpful.

these are all you need for listening, editing, tracking, but i would also add nero6 for burning other stuff.

http://www.musicxp.net/  guide on tweaking xp for music.

flac frontend, shntool. also, get the flac plugin and shnamp for winamp...

and the flac plugin for nero. This will allow you burn cds stright from flac w/nero(actually it is on the fly wav conversion, but still).. DVD Audiofile for windows. Tag and rename bulk tagger for windows to help organize your music.

Some people like Soundforge for editing, some like wavelab. a really good SRC scheme that to me sounds better than the native WL SRC is R8 brain. it is freeware.
MKWACT for shn encoding/decoding
Audacity is a full featured recording.editing prgram that is free

let's first look at what you need to do w/ music stuff...
1. transfer from recorder to pc can be done w/ Explorer as the PMD is seen as another drive
2. editing/sample rate conversion/bit-depth reduction can all be done with wavelab, sound forge, cool edit, etc...which can be found cheaply (i can loan you a disc if you need it also)
3. tracking = cdwave = free
4. burning = nero or feurio or possibly whatever came with the dell (sonicrecord is what they give for free i think, it works, you just have to go into the options once and make sure disc-at-once is selected to remove gaps).  nero adds 2sec gaps by default so you have to manually remove them before burning every time.
5. dvd-a = dvd-audiofile, search this forum for it, very easy to use
6. compressing/decompressing = FLAC frontend, mkwACT (for shn)

since you're not actually using this for recording, but rather file-transfer, editing, burning, sharing, etc, you don't need to tweak all that much.  you say it won't be hooked up to the internet, but you're going to want to have the ability to access the 'net for downloading these programs, downloading windows updates, etc...so you'll want to have at least anti-virus software on it...if you want to use it to stream audio (like through a squeezebox type of unit) it will need to be networked and unless you want to turn off internet access you're pretty much going to be connected....

FWIW, I like:

FREE:  Foobar2000 for playback (w/ FLAC plugin)
   $:  CD-Wave for tracking
$$$:  Adobe Audition for recording/editing (freeware alternative:  Audacity)
$$$:  MegaBitMax for dithering (a la iZotope Ozone plug-in;  freeware alternative:  Audacity)
FREE:  FLAC FrontEnd for lossless compression
FREE:  dBpowerAMP for bulk format conversions (WAV, FLAC, SHN, etc.)
$$:  Nero for burning data discs (plenty of free/shareware options out there, too many to list)
FREE:  EAC for burning and/or ripping audio discs

3. tracking = cdwave = free

CD-Wave != free.  While I can understand why some people are unwilling to spend big bucks on complex, powerful, expensive editing software, especially when using so few of the software's features, there's really no reason NOT to spend a few bucks on CD-Wave if you use it.  It is SHAREware, not FREEware, which means if you use it, you should spend the whopping $15 and register your license.

Ok a couple more questions...

1st, is foobar a better program than winamp and will they both handle 24bit files?

2nd, this computer has the home media edition of XP, is there any usefulness to this or is there a way to not install it when doing the inital re-install of xp?

they both will handle 24 bit files, it is a completely opinion based thing, Ehren. I tried 3 or 4 programs before I settled on Winamp. Windows Media Player will now do flac , etc now too. so it may be another option to look into..

Ehren:

on your media center edition question, no way to not install that component, but no reason to use it either (it's a seperate program within windoze) the media center edition of winxp gives you a VERY slightly dumbed down version of xp pro (which is good).

I personally use foobar2000, its one big advantage over winamp/etc. is that foobar2000 plays back live shows without gaps between tracks.  Winamp can do this too, but generally requires some tweaking.

DVD-Audiofile has already been mentioned, but I think Teddy linked to an older version of it.  It is a freeware program to create DVD-Audio image files (ISO files).  you can then burn these DVD-Audio images with nero or any other DVD data burning program to create a DVD-Audio disc.  a very usefull program indeed.  Scott Brown created the windows GUI for it, and all the details can be found here:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=52892.0

another freeware program that has not yet been mentioned, and another program that Scott created, is xACT.
full details of that one can be found here:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=53359.0
I don't use it for compression/decompression (although it works well for that as well), but I mostly use it as a GUI for shntool.  a very useful thing for those of us who really don't want to deal with DOS commands.
