Topic: mic advise

I am new to recording.  I am looking to get a mic, first one i will have bought.  I have a tascam us-122 going to my ibook.  could you give some options for mics?  i have looked at them and i've seen alot of Instrument/Vocal Mic's.  Is this what i am looking for.  I'd like to stay under 100 or a little over.  If theres a cheap mic that gets good results that would work to.

if you plan on recording in stereo you will need 2 mics, one each for left and right channels.

you may have some difficulties finding a worthwhile pair of mics for under $100

the closest thing to that price point would be the Superlux SMK-H8K set which can be had new for right around $150.
 
in the $200 - $300 range you could try:

I'm a Superlux pimp, always trying to get people to give them a shot as I love them and they're amazing for the $$$$.

Howerer, 2 things to consider since you are on such a budget:

1)  The mics don't have cables, you need to buy XLR cables to go with it and they can be a bit pricey, but you can get a great deal on decent ones here in the Yard Sale.

2)  The mics don't have internal power or plug in power, you have to buy a 48v Phantom Power Supply.  A new SP-2 will cost you about $150, but you can go for an Art II one for about $40.

You could go with some Giant Squid mics with Battery Box for probably close to your limit and be good to go, but the sound quality will suffer.

If you change your limit to about $250, you could get the Lux's complete with T-Bar, Windscreens and Mounts, the Art II Phantom Power supply, Cables, and a Stand.  With that setup, you could expect results like this in a small club:

That recording was done with the stuff outlined above into a CJB3, no fancy pre-amp or A/D to alter the sound quality and no digital editing.

I have been looking for a thread like this.....sorry to hijack.

I have recently inherited some money.....not happy about how however, I have always wanted to enter this hobby and truly dont know how.  I figure mics are the place to start huh?

I have listened to some live recordings however, I dont really know what to do. 

I want something somewhat small I dont like many Jambands or whatever.  No offense to those who do its just not my cup of tea.  So they will have to be taped to my shirt or something I guess. 

Suggestions?
