So......

Going to see Gov't Mule tonight (11/16/2006) at the Charleston Music Hall here in Charleston, SC. Very small venue with beautiful acoustics.

Anyway, we have the 4 seats, dead center in the first row of the balcony. I'm planning on running a 4 Mic Matrix with a borrowed pair of Neumann km184 (fixed cardioids) and a Oade m248. These will be in addition to my Neumann u89i's and EAA-PSP2. Everything will be going into a 744t. There is a slight possibility that a V3 will be making its way down here, too.

Right now, I'm planning on running the u89i's hypercardioid split maybe 10ft or so from the balcony with the km184's in an xy pattern dead center. If you've checked out the link, you'll see the beauty of this is no mic stands. I can clamp onto everything.

As far as preamps go, I think I'm gonna go u89i~>psp2 into channels 1 + 2, then km184~>m248 into channels 3 + 4. If the V3 makes its way, I'll go km184~>psp2 into 1 + 2 and u89i~>V3 into 3 + 4.

One of my big questions is how to run the m248~>744t. I know rca~>t3af. Got that taken care of. I don't know the levels. I've never run an m248, so I don't know how hot to run it, nor do I know where to set the levels on the 744t. Anybody have experience with this combo?

Given the above, I'd consider running the U89s subcard or omni.

What about split omnis with the 184's coincident or near coincident as a center pair?  I have had some great results with this.  My personal favorite when going 4 mics in a great sounding venue.

or as Brian stated, the subs in place of the omni's for some rear rejection.  Just split the same, point at the stacks.


Edited to add:  Whenever I run hypers in a 4 mic mix, it is as a center pair from the section.

Good recommendation, IMO, running the 184s coincident.  After running my MKx / C414s in various configs, I find I like at least one of the pairs coincident and the other pair near-coincident or split.  I've found it creates a more coherent soundstage.  Something about time delay differences between a near-coincident pair + time delay differences between a split pair causes things to get unfocused to my ears.  Removing the time delay differences within one pair by making them coincident seems to help.

I've never been in the room, but it seems like you could easily get away with split subcards in there.  I'd be less likely to split omni's, remember the people are sitting awfully close.

If you can suspend the u89s just below the balcony lip, either by hanging them via the mic cable or with a small boom stand that will extend below the balcony lip, you'll be able to reject/baffle to the rear and still run omni.  Coincident with the km184s in the center will help with the mixing in post.

Another option which I'd probably choose...run the u89s mid-side in the center, and the km184s as a flanking DIN/DINa/NOS/ORTF pair. 

Sorry, no input on the pre-amp factor.

It is just me but I would split the 89's as omnis about 15'-20' and run the 184's in the center x/y 90.
