Super Clamp/Flex Arm question
« on: May 15, 2007, 08:33:32 AM »
I'm planning to order a Bogen Super Clamp with the Heavy Duty Flex Arm. Reviewed some earlier posts but still have two quick questions:

1 - One end of the Flex Arm apparently fits in the Super Clamp. Does the other end need an adapter so my horizontal bar will fit on it? Not sure of the size off the top of my head, but the horizontal bar fits on a standard mic stand now.

2 - B&H Photo sells both the clamp and arm for $25 each ($50) total. Anybody know of a better deal someplace? Could not find the "Heavy Duty" version of the Flex arm on eBay.

Thanks in advance,
Tim

The HD Flex Arm has a 3/8" thread on top. You may need an adapter to convert to a 5/8" thread depending on what thread size your mic bar takes. Which type of bar do you have?

Color me stupid but I'm not sure. It came with the Superlux HK8 mics I bought as a used set. I'll check the size tonight and just order then. Thanks.

The specs on the Heavy Duty Flex Arm show a 1/4" male end on the mic side (not 3/8").

Anybody know where I can order a 1/4"-20 female to 5/8"-27 male adapter?
Or maybe I need a 1/4"-20 female to 3/8"-16 male adapter AND a 3/8"-16 female to 5/8"-27 maile adapter.

I've been scouring the Internet with no luck (other than finding a few sources for the 1/4" to 3/8" adapter.

Woops, you're right. I have an adapter for this that I got at a local photo store. I did the 2 adapter route (1/4" to 3/8", then 3/8" to 5/8").

Sorry I forgot about that. The whole adapter system is also on my Bogen 3333 stand, so I considered it one adapter when it should have been 2.

B&H carries lots of adapters. DIdn't see any 1/4 > 5/8 in a quick glance but lots of 3/8 > 5/8 in various styles and prices, most under $5 and a few under $2.

<edited to add micsupply lists a 1/4-20 > 5/8 adapter, but it may be cheaper to get two adapters at B&H. Only you can decide which is more important, price or convenience,

The standard stud and Flex Arm both have a 5/8" male stud with a 1/4" threaded tip (at least the ones I have do).  I like to use to use a Bogen "Rapid Adapter" that secures to the stud (doesn't screw onto the 1/4" tip).  Provides fast and easy on/off.  Like these:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/271577-REG/Delta_21246_Rapid_Adapter_5_8_.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5357-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_3102_5_8_Stud_to_3_8_.html

Both of the above adapters have a 3/8" male threaded tip, so you'll still need a 3/8" female > 5/8" male adapter, like these:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/286147-REG/AKG_KM217_3_8_Female_to_5_8_.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/284333-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_MIBA_Female_3_8_to_5_8_.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/400109-REG/On_Stage_MA200_MA200_Screw_Adapter.html

So, the complete chain looks like this:

SuperClamp > Flex Arm or standard stud > 5/8" stud Rapid Adapter > 3/8"-16 female to 5/8"-27 male adapter > mic bar
