DPA 4017 shotgun mic
« on: July 05, 2007, 01:41:37 PM »
I don't remember seeing this posted yet.  At NAB, DPA introduced their new 4017 shotgun mic.

So if they're making shotgun mics now, does that mean they might decide hypercardioids aren't the root of all evil and might start making a hyper in their compact series, ala the 4022? :D

Wonder what the price will be?
Being made by DPA ,my guess for a matched pair with shock mounts, $4K to $5K.

That shockmount in the pic above looks like it will cost 2 grand by itself  :)

GREAT news for us hyper lovers :) That truly is groundbreaking news from DPA! I bet that shtgun sounds KILLER to. I wouldnt mind having some ck69 shotguns :) spyder is selling his right now too. They would do great in big sheds or arenas where even hypers sometimes dont cut it. and i alsways thought guns from an aarena would be thin, well JDS's vegas/phish 2004 gun tapes are amazing :) TOTALLY changed my opinion of guns for sure. a good pair of guns are worth their weight in gold, that is if you like focused/chatterless recordings(which im def starting to prefer over the 'being there' ORTF cards tapes :)

i don't see them rushing to make a hyper anytime soon just because of this(if at all).  they're just trying to make some money in the broadcasting/film/video department by, once again, proving they make some of the best microphones on the planet.  the demand for a transparent shotgun is always there in those markets.

i thought about bying those hypers but these days i would probably be in a situation to run them once a year if that.
5 years ago, i'd be telling another story though :)   most shows these days we end up going to are fairly small.

gina and i drove by hampton the other day and wondered if we would ever see another show there.    been to quite a few things there but there isn't much going on these days that would draw us to a venue that size (13k i think) much less a bigger shed.

i would love to run them once.   a dude i met at merlefest the first year they allowed taping had a pair.   i have wanted to try them since then (99)

They tell me list will be just a tad over $2000 apiece for the mics.

Just wondering if anyone here got to play with the 4017 shotguns yet.

Not much out as far as reviews go.

Here are some MP3 test samples I did find;
