HELP!! NEWBIE Here! How/What/Where etc...
« on: December 25, 2007, 07:45:03 PM »
Anyone have any advice about how to get started in this hobby?.  I attend A LOT of shows-usually within the first 15 rows of the stage-general admission-usually standing not sitting-I know NOTHING about recording,  can anyone give advice on good equipment needed looking for quality equipment recommendations-anything under $1K-where to learn what and how to record etc...
all replies greatly appreciated!!

Well, there is no better place to learn than this site!  Read, read, and read some more!

Plenty of threads regarding started rigs, etc. You should be able to get a nice setup for $1000, but certainly you don't need to spend that much to get going and make nice recordings.  Check out the Church Audio threads for mics and preamps, and there are a lot of threads about various recorders.

Check out the Yard Sale section for some good used gear to get you started.

Agree about reading...but for a little bit of a shortcut, here are a couple thoughts to get you started.

First, decide if you're gonna be recording mostly open with the mics on a stand or if you need to record in a more discreet manner.  The decision is usually based on the audio taping policy of most of the bands that you listen to.  If you're like alot of people on this list though, once you start taping you gravitate towards bands that allow taping, so you end up putting more stock and investment into the open rig.

For $1k you can get a good start.

For open taping, a good start would be a Fostex FR-2LE recorder.  This will run you $400 - $450 new...easy to find on ebay.  These are good sounding full featured units straight out of the box and you need no external pre-amp, so it's a so-called 'all-in-one' box.  After you get some shows under your belt, you'll probably want to invest another $170 or so to have Busman do his magic on the box...he does a great mod to this box that makes it sound even better.

Next you need cables and a mic stand.  Those will run you about $100...maybe $50 for each although if you want some better sounding silver cables right from the start, you're looking at around $100 for a good set of cables.  I like silvers and think they're worth the extra $$.  There are ALOT of cables on the yard sale, so look no further than that.  For a stand, you want to search for a light stand on sites like B&H photo.  I recommend one that goes at least 8 feet high.  Light stands come standard with a 1/4x26 thread so you'll need hardware to convert to standard 5/8" that most mic mounting hardware requires.  Count on another $10 to $15 for the adapters or hardware that goes on top of the stand.

Most important are the mics.  For the $400 or so that you have left, there are some great options.  Again check the yard sale.  Here are some mics that come to mind in that price range for a pair and most of these can be had new for that price (arranged from my own personal favorites down to my least favorites)...

Karma K10mp
AKG 391
Oktava MC012
Avantone CK1
Studio Projects C4

All of these mics sound pretty darn great for $400.  If you wanted to spend just a little more and get a LOT of bang for your buck, vintage AKG451eb's sound GREAT and while they don't seem to last a long time around here on the YS, they seem to be plenty available on ebay for around $500 to $550 a pair.  Personally, I think that would be what I'd go for because I think they sound more than $100 better than the mics that I've listed that are in your price range, but that's just my subjective opinion.

Finally, once you decide on mics, you'll need shock mounts or at least some hardware to hold hte mics on the top of your light stand.  Shock mounts can run you from $0 in the case of some of the mics that have the shocks already included, to maybe $50 apiece.  There are plenty of low cost options for shockmounts though.  For example, lots of mics are 22mm in diameter and the Joe Meek JM27 shocks work well for those...the JM27's are $20 each.

So, that is some detail that should get you going.

Also, something that MUST be mentioned is that, in addition to read read read, you should LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN.  When you're new at this, the very best thing you can do for yourself is spend two or three hours just listening to shows people have recorded on Live Music Archive (www.archive.org/details/etree) using the same equipment that you are considering buying.  You can quickly hone in on what sound pleases you the most for the money you have to spend.

Good luck...hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the replies-I am certain that most of the shows I would be going to would not allow taping-so I need a set-up that I could use "stealth"-is that the correct terminology in taping circles?
So any suggestion on equipment I can fairly easily sneak into a show without a "fake arm cast" and anything I could use while being in the mix of a crowd without being too conspicuous would be great!
Lastly-any suggestion on equipment that i could fairly easily transfer onto my computer for download and ipod transfer.
Any suggestions?
thanks

You need to ask yourself,
"Am I going to be doing more open or stealth shows"

Having a budget of 1k is going to get you a nice rig. Lots of opitions, especially on mics, pres, bit buckets, etc. etc.

For a pair of some sweet mics only coast around $300 are the Avantones CK-1's, Great mics
at a great price.

http://www.avantelectronics.com/CK-1.htm

For pre's you got a lot of opitions, V3, MiniMe, the UA-5 are great pre's aswell.

Bit buckets, Iriver, Microtracker, JB3.

Hope some of this make sense.

If you can put together any rig, with a V3 in the chain, for 1k, I will eat my hat. Even a V3 with free mics and a free recorder is going to break the 1k mark with accessories and whatnot. Oh, and Avatones may be great mics, but would SUCK for stealthing. Theyre big and red, not very stealth.

For just getting started, and stealthing as mentioned, Id go with either a church audio package>iriver h120 or maybe a used DPA 4061>MMA6000>iriver h120 setup. Lots of options though. AT853>SP Battery box>Iriver, the list goes on.

One great thing about the IRIVER is that any computer will recognize it as an external drive via usb2, so you can just drag and drop files with no special software. You have to get them refurbished off ebay though, generally.

Import into CD Wav to track out the show, run it through FLAC frontend, and upload to your tracker of choice.

Welcome aboard! A fellow newbie here, I just got my rig and recorded my first show and have found this site to be an incredible asset. I too had a budget and found the best advice was to listen. I listened to as many sources and similar types of music I like to get a feel for what I liked.

I must have settled on 3-4 sets of mics, then listened again and again and narrowed my selection based on my budget and ears. I will add that I made the mics the priority as they are the first transducer of the music and I wanted to capture the experience as closely as possible within my budget.

I did not spend as much on the deck as I thought intially and spent the majority of $ budget on the mic's. Just another thought for you. We are here to help and wish you the best in your quest.

grasshopper, When you can snatch the mic stand from our hands....

So much to learn from here. I had been taping for a couple of years, found out about TS and felt like starting all over  ;D So many helpfull people and just as much advice.
To me, 1000 bucks almost seems to much for a first rig, but then again, I've spend probably 2 times as much with all the gear switches.
I'd say, listen to some shows on dime or check the samples that are posted in here to find out what sound you like. Ease of use is hardly an issue imho, recorders like R-09 do their jobs like a charm.
Will you be taping loud / rock? This will affect your choice of mics (SPL handling) and weather you need a pre-amp or a battery box.
Good luck!

Another word of advise..get what gear you want right off the bat...dont settle for something else just because it costs a little less...because you will not be happy and will want to upgrade almost immediately. This will actually save you $ in the long run.  Welcome to team stealth.

Stealth isn't necessarily about getting the smallest rig possible. In fact it can be quite fun to see just how much equipment you can get into the venue :)

Your budget gives you plenty of options. A nice rig built around a pair of dpa406x would certainly be within reach.

Whatever rig you narrow down your choices to... why not track down other live recordings made with the same (or similar) gear? If you can't find any suitable recordings on the usual places (dimeadozen.org, bt.etree.org, thetradersden.org) you could always ask on here for sample clips...

+t and welcome aboard :)

best regards,
stephen
