looking for a recorder for a friend
« on: December 28, 2007, 09:02:57 PM »
a buddy of mine is looking for a new recorder.  here're the guidelines:

-small and compact,
-up to 48k
-long recording lenghths (he does dj shows. so 10 hrs?)  not necessarily on the same battery.
-the usual line in/digital in
-hd or memory stick doesn't really matter.

what would be the best fit?

Recording from the mixer, so line in?

I'd be using a Zoom H2 or Edirol R09 with a 2 Gig card at 320 kbps MP3 and the power adapter they ship with.

I'd have to recommend a Nomad JB3.  Allows both line-in and digi-in.  Internal HD allows many hours at 16/48.

If you're looking for 24bit, you'll have to look elsewhere...

***Do you have PHISH, VIDA BLUE, JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT or any other Phish related DATs/Tapes/MDs that need to be transferred???  I can do them for you!!!***

I will return your DATs/Tapes/MDs.  I'll also provide Master FLAC files via DropBox.  PM me for details.

Sony PCM R500 > SPDIF > Tascam HD-P2
Nakamichi DR-3 > (Oade Advanced Concert Mod) Tascam HD-P2
Sony MDS-JE510 > Hosa ODL-276 > Tascam HD-P2

jb3 will probably be too big.

i guess digi in isn't essential.  he'll be doing some line-in, but i think he's planning on doing some stealthing as well.

i think for him 16/48 will be good enough.

budget? open ended.

If your friend can live without digital-in/out I´d go for the Marantz PMD620.
Check my 9h55min testrun with 2 rechargeables(2700mAh) at 24bit/48kHz.
Using line-in will increase recording time as no internal mics are drawing power then.
It has the size(10cm x 6cm x 2,4cm) of a cigarette-pack and runs with 2 1,5V batteries or rechargeables.
MP3 recording is limited to 192kbit though on this machine.

1st: SONY PCM-M10 + DPA 4060's + DPA MPS 6030 power supply (microdot)
2nd: iPhone 5 + "Rode iXY" microphone/"Zoom IQ5" microphone

That's mine, and I think it would be a nice fit for this application.
