TJ's thread had me thinking about some issues I've been having with iZotope ozone 3.  just trying it out and am very pleased with the dithering for the most part, see below.

I am mostly using it in wavelab.  audtion some but I hate having to dither twice (32 > 24, 24 > 16).  that's for another thread.  lets just stick to using it in wavelab.

basically I'm wondering how y'all use it to just dither.   do you just use dither and none of the other options?  ie loudness maximizer etc?  when you uncheck "bypass" they all become active.  seems that when loudness maximizer is "active" it inserts a small gap at the beginning of the file.  for audition that would be fine but with anything over 2 gigs in wavelab where you need to paste the files back together it is not.

with it off there is no gap but with it off I'm not sure it's actually using izotope to dither.   ie does "bypass", bypass the dither as well or just the other options??  if it bypass's the dither then it's just using wavelabs "stock dither" and that isn't good.

also what is the Auto blanking box under the dither box's?  if you are wondering it did not cause the gaps or take them away.

here are a couple screenshots of the "gap" it's inserting.  sorry about the shitty quality but you get the idea

before dither with "active" on

after

before dither with bypass checked.

after dither, no gap

I've read this

http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/OzoneDitheringGuide.pdf

& this is from the help file

Quote
Ozone allows you to effectively convert and dither to 24, 20, 16, 12 or 8 bits. This is useful for mastering a track for CD (16 bit) from a 24 bit source, for example.

Note that the active or bypassed state of this module applies only to the Loudness Maximizer processor. Dither is independent of the Loudness Maximizer.  To turn dithering on and off, change the Dither type. By default, the dither is off (Type "None"), meaning that your program material is left in the original format. To reduce the bit depth of the material, change the Type from None to MBIT+, Type 1 or Type 2.

so it seems that as it says it's independent so it is in fact using isotope to dither and not the internal dithering of wavelab??  I think I answered by my own question but wondered how others are using it.

I have not used the Loudness Maximizer (prefer the Waves L3) or the other processors, but I do use the Ozone 3 dithering module within Wavelab 5.0 as you have it displayed, and it is correct that with bypass checked it is still dithering - just use the bit meter display in Wavelab and you will see that the output data is indeed 16-bit (assuming that's what you have it set to).

As trajhip2000 said, yes, dither is still active when Bypass is checked.

Auto-blanking will cause the dither to mute applying dither noise when there is no audio.  This is to prevent the low-level noise from showing up in silent parts of your audio.

I reproduced your start blanking problem.  It only happened when I left the Loudness Maximizer bypass unchecked--meaning it was running it through the threshold/gain part of that module.  If you click the Bypass box, it doesn't add the silence.  When it did blank the file, it didn't turncate any of it, but rather padded 16ms of silence at the start.

Good observation!

thanks for the info guys

so I assume you leave it on??  sounds like it should be.  been using uv22hr and it's so straight forward that nothing like this has come up.  but I do like the results better with izotope.

Are you guys running the latest version of Ozone 3? IIRC there's an update that's been available for at least a few months, but I haven't bothered with it cause from the description it didn't impact the dithering module. I'm wondering whether they might have fixed that gap issue...

You can buy straight through the iZotope website @ http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/buy.html
or someone like Sweetwater has it for a bit cheaper: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Ozone3/

It really is one of those essential plug-ins.

Yup, I agree completely.  Had the Lite version for a while with my 003 rack and just picked up the full version from Scitscat for about $169 shipped.  Well worth the investment.

Great find! Their site has it listed at $149, which is a steal for this plugin.
