first timer w/ Edirol 09 needs some setting & stealth tips
« on: September 17, 2007, 03:28:33 PM »

Just bought a stealth rig consisting of the following:

- EDIROL R-09

-  LOW PROFILE STEREO MICROPHONE POWER SUPPLY FOR EDIROL R-09 AND MINI MICROPHONES

- PREMIUM AUDIO TECHNICA CARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES No Additional Windscreens (premium windscreens are included at no extra cost); Include Shure rotating clips (no extra charge); Cardioid elements (standard - no extra cost); Add low sensitivity modification for very high sound levels; No high SPL power module (mics will need plug-in-power or Ultra high SPL option below); No Ultra high SPL modules

I won't have time to test the rig out before I try to record my first show tomorrow night. Can anyone offer any tips in regards to settings, recording tips, etc. Is there something that is fairly idiot proof for someone who is very limited in their knowledge?

Thanks!

Hi,

Simples rules you should follow ;):

AGC: OFF
LOW-CUT: OFF
MIC GAIN: LOW

If you're going to use the 24 bit/48.000 option ( more headroom) a recording level peaking at -6db to -3db should be fine because you can always boost the level on post. Using 16 bit, you have to peak close to 0db (more risk of clipping and ruin you tape). I'd go with  24/48.000 ( use your screen to select this option).
Hope that helps. Good luck!

w/this recorder, get as close to 0db as you can...no matter what resolution.

Another thing: if you're going to use a battery box, Line In (and  if you happen to tape a very loud show)
is the way to go.
Take care

Since you are stealthing, make sure to download the latest firmware and shut that "hey! taping here!" red light off.

Be sure to read the FAQ:

Most of the suggestions are useful, but some ONLY apply to MD/DAT and most other mini-decks.

The R-09 is one deck where going in MIC input (NOT LINE) works better ALL THE TIME with all types of especially small external battery powered mics, and can power some mics directly without external battery for some types of recording if remembering to turn on the MIC POWER in the menu.

Suggest using MIC input with your type of mic system, AND if using 24bit depth (also use 44.1K verses 48K sample rate as this is way better for later making CD), recording level can be much lower at -12 to -6 dB without quality loss or noise recording amplified venue.

Proof of input ability in R-09 review that should make some settings easier to understand at: www.sonicstudios.com/r-09revw.htm#inputs

Proof of deck's adequate mic input noise floor recording at -12 dB average VU for amplified concerts even with very low output type mic is with recordings made and posted on TS page: http://taperssection.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=dc5cb19c3eae03a2a98a47d2a8b6b290&topic=83254.0

Have fun learning, taping, listening, and SHARING your recordings!

If youre gonna run without a battery box...you better make sure that unit will supply enough power to run those mics. The u853s were designed to use phantom power, there are ways around that, but the phantom is def the best way to go if possible. Under powering them will be a major problem.

I've run AT-853s > that same batt box > R-09 lots of times.  Most of time I run Line-in and end up with something in the middle of the 0-30 scale.  I only use mic-in for a quiet show.  Is it the best or only way?  No.  It works for me.  AT-853s (which don't have the 4.7k mod) put out a lot of signal.

If the r9 only has a "real" resolution of about 15bits, w/the rest being noise...
why would you want to record w/the levels so low?  wouldn't it behoove you to run the deck as if it were a 16bit device?

Hey NICK!  Does this look like a graph of 15 bit performance to you ???

Looks way better than that to me, but maybe I'm only fooling myself and going deaf not hearing that way too excessive noise in the direct mic in recordings I posted in TS using EXTREMELY LOW SENSITIVITY DSM-6S/EL mics at http://taperssection.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=dc5cb19c3eae03a2a98a47d2a8b6b290&topic=83254.0

I thought there has been tonz of documented testing w/the R9 and it was determined to only use about 15bits of actual signal w/the rest being ass ?

which, always floored me because I think the r9 sounds *awesome* to my ear.
