I'm looking for a small-portable-stealth 4 track recorder to tape from 2 stereo sources into line in (2 pairs of mics already powered by their battery boxes). I'd like to use AA batteries, SD card and 24/96 is not really so important. internal mics are not necessary

I've seen ZoomH2 can be modified for that. H4N can probably do but is there something smaller around?

got some advise about that?

The Edirol R09HR is much admired around these parts.

I think you need to be clearer about these two sources, mics? stereo? what?

It shows on your profile that you have the r-09 and r-09hr?  Do you mean that your looking for a 4-track recorder?

Short answer: no.
H4n is the smallest offering on the market.
Unless you want to stealth an R-44, but you need big balls to do that :-)

Stick to your two R-09s and sync the sources in post...

Both options can be done (the R44 + syncing R09) although syncing R09s is more of a pain in the ass in my book.

By the way, if it can record 4 sources coming from its own 4 mikes, why the hell can't we hack to make the 4 sources coming from external mikes? I'm sure it can be done..

Too bad that every recording I listened made with the H2 sound a bit 'digitallish' and.. I mean, one from the R09HR is a lot of times better, in my opinion.

Because the process for the mod is to basically heavily attenuate the input signal, then that signal hits their very cheap mic pre-amps which boosts the signal back up

Lot of points for extra junk noise to get in there, especially with how cheap the whole thing is.

The original poster can certainly try that, but I would advise against it. Believe me I looked pretty heavily into it but ended up scrapping it. If the pre-amps could be bypassed, then it could work. I'm pretty sure they're part of the integrated circuit though.

Actually I was talking about recordings made with factory H2.
Probably it's just me, but i don't really like how it sounds.. ok, it's cheap and it offers a lot of features, but it just misses the most important thing for a recorder. Recording quality.

Heck, you're right, strictly speaking... 
But my understanding was that the sonosax takes only two analog signals, the rest of the channels has to be fed via digital-in (meaning more outboard boxes to carry).
