Title: ADK A-51 TL question
Post by: Tyler McGhee on August 12, 2004, 11:52:46 AM
So I have been researching these mics.  I have gathered that split omni's kick ass.
what tbar do you use for this? how wide to you spread your mics?  if you spread
too far, do you clamp on to someone elses stand? what is a good clamp to get?

if running card, hyper or figure 8, what recording patterns are best?
how tbar is best suited for these?

I just am having a hard time imaging what ortf or din or xy looks
like with LD mics.

Thanks everyone!

Tyler

ok, i'm getting a clear picture now.
so really it would be beneficial to have a couple bars, maybe
a shure vert bar and a t-bar for ortf and din.

how about blumlein? i see that shure vert bar, but what is keeping those two mics in that position?

thanks for the pics!  (worth a 1000 words  ;D )

>>> Ask Brian Costigan about his Shure vertical bar mod for the TL's!!
Much better than my rig in the pictures.

I disagree, that 4 mic bar kicks ass.

I split mine about 3ft with a nifty and cheap solution using a clamp and a 3foot bar that the shockmounts screw onto...wish I could remember the hardware parts and where I got them ???

is there a standard for split omnis?
or is it just trial and error?

The standard on DPA's website says 1 foot apart for every 3 feet from the sound source.  I don't think that is quite realistic for most people, as getting cables that long would be difficult, not to mention blocking at two stands so far apart.

At horning's hideout, I ran with mine about 20 feet apart.  I borrowed a stand from another guy who ended up patching out of me that day.  The results were good.

I ran 25' apart for moe at High Sierra and we were 30' back and I think that recording turned out amazing. Its on the archive if you want to check it out. The image that running split gives is very realistic to the source and besides its fun to do. ;D

the times i have run split have been 4' and 8' both were onstage.  If i get the chance i will try and run a bigger spread.

the 4 mic bar is a good piece of gear, but Brian's LD mod for the Shure Bar is much lighter to carry any distance, lighter on your stand, especially w/ the bigger mics!!
Its funny, b'cuz I never actually tried Brians mod, i sold the mics not long after I got it ;D

peace

i have the mod for the vert bar and i have the t-bar.  it is nice to have both, but like you have in that picture, with the 4 mic bar, you can have someone else attach to the vert bar.  with my stand, weight is not really a big deal.  also, carrying around the t-bar is hardly anything extra, relative to the extra batteries i usually carry around.

Problem is finding someone willing to run their mics that far off center to clamp onto either side.

I ran into this problem at a recent festy wanted to run split omni, but no extra stand - there was nobody setup 10' off center to one side to clamp to and run my stand the other side. Seems those that use one stand want to be closer to center.  Hmmm.

Just makes for a smaller split (for me at least), clamp onto farthest right stand, and run your stand on the left the same amount.  I had 3 to 3.5' split - worked nicely (not too many tapers out west, at least at this festy - baja bash, so cal).  Work with what you got, but splitting mics I would recommend a clamp, as noted.

Will the BCostigan Vert Bar mod work with the TL Super Shock mounts ?

The mod only affects the length of the vert bar.  Kinda like a big spacer.  The same threads will be there for the mounts to screw to, just further apart.
