Reccomended 9.6v RC batter for JB3 AND UA-5? Fuses?
« on: May 27, 2005, 03:43:08 PM »
Sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't see this specific question so here goes.

I recently got a UA-5 and last night I built cables that split the output of a 9.6 RC car battery so one lead can go to the SIMA adapter > JB3 and the other goes direct to the UA-5.

After a bit of reading here, it's sounding like I may not get much time using the 1600 maH RC battery I got at Rat Shack. It's this one: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=23-331

That battery worked pretty well for just my PS-2/AD-20 combo but with a big festival this summer I want to be be sure I get good run times (all day or maybe a half day and then I'll swap). I'll be able to get to AC for charging at night, but there may be daytime ending and then straight to night and then late night shows in some cases.

I run AT933 > PM4 so I am using phantom on the UA-5.

Also, I see mention of fuses. I hadn't thought of that. Has anyone fried their stuff with RC batteries? What fuse(s) would be the right one(s) for the UA-5 and the JB3? Man, this is getting complicated!

I've seen that WalMart suggestion, but with an RC fast charger and battery purchased, I'd like to stick with that unless it's a really bad way to go.

Suggestions? Thanks!

matt;

you can calculate the expected runtime based on the current draws of the ua5/jb3 combo. with only 1600mah capacity, i don't think you'll get too much. ~2.5hrs at most, imo.

as far as fuses go, i run them when ever i can and always recommend them. it's like insurance... you never know you have it until you need it.

if you're looking to power through a festival, you will need much larger capacity RC packs or several more of those 1600maH packs.

Thanks. What rated fuses would you recommend? I like to run the JB3 with a batter in it, so I'd want to account for that draw if the internal wasn't topped up all the way (which is how I'd try to keep it).

What's the highest capacity 9.6 RC pack out there? It also seems like I coudl wire up a few of them in parallel to basically make a bigger bank, right?

also, buy NIMH)Nickel Metal-Hydride) batteries over NICD(Nickel Cadmium) batteries, because the memeory ewffect is alot better in the NIMH batts!

you can basically treat them like shit and charge whenever you want once theyre cycled correctly once getting them(which means charge fully-discharge fully-charge fiully)

I had the same questions regarding how to determine the properly rated fuse.

check out the last post by Chuck - http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=39076.0

looks like for a ua-5 & jb3 youd want somewhere between 1.75 - 2.0 A fuse
jb3 draw   ~300maH (although it seems debated)
ua-5 draw   450maH
Cushion  ~ 1A (1000 maH)

Total ~ 1.75 A

I figure 2.0 should allow for powering up and HD write draws etc. - If I am wrong someone please correct me as I will probably be using a 2.0A resettable fuse to run this same rig

the current draw of a jb3 is not constant as you noted. i believe someon here measured the current draw at various stages of the jb3 (turn-on, initial hdd spinup and standard recording).

imo, a 1.5A to 2A fuse would be fine for a jb3/ua5 combo.

Where can I get resetable fuses? Looking at RatShack online all I see is the old replacable type.
Are they just called something else, like circuit breaker?
