Topic: Mic stand recommendation?

I am wondering if someone could point me online to a place that sells inexpesive mic stands.  Most of my DAT recordings are stealth, but every now and then I record in clubs with permission of the artist. I'm looking for a tripod with some kind of extention on it to secure 2 SP cardoid mics.

I never would have thought about a photo tripod. Is there a difference between that and a mic tripod?

Also, on the "T" when the mics go, what distance should cardoids be apart from each other? 6" 12" or more?  Again, this would be for club use.

I would reccomend going the light stand route.  I have seen that Tbar for the mini-AT mics and it looked sufficient for a spaced omni config.  You may want to check out some of the DIY results people have had found in the rig pics section for DIN and XY if you have cardoid mics.

Stability and height are the first two things that pop into my head. A "mic stand" will only give you, maybe 7', and that's with a boom attachement.

The boom stands are kinda clumsy and not nearly as secure as using a light stand.  Photo tripods are something totally different and not reccomended.

bogen/manfrotto makes some really nice 8-10 ft stands.

I picked up the Amvona 11 ft light stand on ebay, actually 2 of them, and they arrived today. Nice and sturdy and a full 11 feet in height. My question is, how do I get a T-bar on this, as the top is not threaded at all, and doesn't appear to unscrew? I can't image folks are using clamps on these. Is there some sort of  adapter used ? Anyone help me here with what they did?

there are adaptors available for those stands - they run about 10-15 bucks.  available in 3/8 and 1/2 inch both #20 thread.

Also to think about...  check the size of the footprint.. if you were looking for say a 10 ft and the 13 ft has basically the same footprint go for the bigger one.. 

The height advantage will mean that you do not have to necessarily extend the unit to its max where it is least stable... the extra height means you will not have to use the last extension but on a rare occasion...and thus you should have a more stable playform for your gear and others clamping.

Since I run LD's I am a little more concerned with this nuance than some -
