« on: November 23, 2007, 12:47:09 AM »
after many many tapes, the m1 is finally acting up.  i am looking to replace it with a solid state recorder.  stealth. i usually go 1/8" trs line in, but mic and mic -20 would be great.  also aa batts.  also small, reliable and easy to use.    thx in advance.

i like the edirol r-09.  supports 32,44.1,48khz and 16 or 24bit. can be had in the 300 neighborhood.  supports up to 4gb SD without issue, and some 8gb sd cards as well.  lasts about 4 hours on 2 double AAs.  Has a mic in with an optional pad and also a line in -- both 1/8".  Super easy to use.  the only gripe is the level meter is smaller than the sony portable DAT models but still OK for stealth situations.  I got mine about six months ago and LOVE it.

R-09 gets my vote and here is the FAQ which may answer any questions you have on it:

Although the verdict isn't in yet, the brand-spanking-new Marantz PMD620 (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,91816.0.html) may also be worth a look.  Very simple to use, small, and pretty sturdy.  Can handle cards much bigger than currently available (up to 2 TB)...

Additionally, the new Sony (PCM-D50) looks very intriguing (although a bit bigger/heavier than the Edirol or Marantz)...
