Audio Samples of Omnis and Cards available
« on: October 13, 2005, 08:17:45 AM »
There have been several questions about using omnis either as stand alone mics or in a mix. Last night I took a single recording I did back in April and took 2 minutes from a single song during that set. I made a few different combinations all from the same recording (each mic is on it's own channel), so you have the exact same configuration, same location, same A/D, and same recorder. All I did was mute the channels in my DAW that I didn't want processed so you have what you need.

I wanted to do this in full 24/48, but the bandwidth was pretty steep. Even cutting these down to 16/44.1 FLAC was a bit more than I wanted, so I made these MP3 files. I realize this isn't perfect, but if somebody has a good place to host some large files, I'm all ears (and you will be too) ;).

Instead of posting all the links again, here is the thread where I talk more about them and the configuration and where you can grab them from to hear for yourself what Omnis at a distance can and can't do for you.

Enjoy 'em.

So, I'm kind of curious, is this type of thing helpful to anybody? I'm not necessarily looking for comment on the actual recordings, simply if having some samples like these help people. Do folks want these as 24-bit WAV files (these would have to be hosted somewhere else however), or 16-bit WAV files?

I find it useful.  I think the samples demonstrate quite well:

  • the differing results from omnis and cards in the same location
  • the benefits of mixing omnis and cards
  • the benefits of mixing SBD + AUD

If I was a new taper, or even an experienced taper considering omnis or cards (whichever I didn't already have), I'd find this very useful.  I think ultimately a louder, heavier electric band might prove more useful for most folks, but I still think the results are applicable.

I'm adding a few of my comps to tapers.org...

NJB3 v. D100, line-in
SX-M2/LS2 v. NBox
Dither comparison

...and I can host these samples, as well.  I don't know that 24-bit is necessary, though I think 16-bit would offer better perspective than MP3.  We may also host useful comps directly here on TS, but haven't wrangled the details yet.

OK, I'm working on a sample exactly like this one from the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (5 samples. Omnis, cards, board, mics combined, mics and board combined). These will be 16-bit WAV files.

Big thanks to Wayne for providing new FLAC samples of a louder, heavier recording (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club), once again comparing:

  • omnis
  • cards
  • soundboard
  • omnis + cards mix
  • omnis + cards + soundboard mix
.
The comparison is now available on tapers.org in the gear comparisons directory.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.
