You're in the right place to ask about which ones confuse you.
-
Maybe a good idea to start here:
https://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=AcronymGlossary
-
ORTF - nobody knows
DIN - nobody knows
DINA - nobody knows
NOS - nobody knows
PS; Kinda joking, but I'd guess that not many here on ts.com know what these stand for. I mean, we all know that they're mic configurations (e.g. 17, 20 or 30cm spacing and 90 or 120 degrees angle of incidence) but we don't know what the acronyms stand for. I know I don't and I've been taping for over 25 years.
-
They are abbreviations of the national recording organizations that originally developed the associated stereo microphone configuration. Some of these organizations longer exist or now go by a different name:
Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (French) > ORTF
Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (Dutch) > NOS
Deutsches Institut für Normung (German) > DIN
Radio Audizioni Italiane (Italian) > RAI
etc..
Rolls right off the tongue, and fits squarely in the category of "more info than you really need." ; )
-
They are all different variations on the configuration of a two-channel, near-spaced stereo-microphone pair. The important thing isn't so much the name but the spacing /angle associated with it:
ORTF = capsules spaced 17 cm (6.7 inches) / angled 110°
DINA = capsules spaced 17 cm (6.7 inches) / angled 90°
DIN = capsules spaced 20 cm (7.8 inches) / angled 90°
RAI = capsules spaced 21 cm (8.3 inches) / angled 100°
NOS = capsules spaced 30 cm (11.8 inches) / angled 90°

I didn't "bite" on this one as I was waiting for some "clarity" of the question.
Others have added a few "abbreviations" which are mostly tapers' nomenclature.
THAT SAID-
OP- WHICH abbreviations are you asking about? 8) :shrug:
-
I think we're SOL as OP seems to be MIA
-
I think I now understand what MDC stands for, but I'm still puzzled by TORRES.

LOL
Here's a link to a pretty extensive glossary of audio terms which includes lots of abbreviations- https://lossenderosstudio.com/glossary.php

Since someone actually came up with a serious answer, the one that you'll see not regarding mic configuration often is DFC - dead fucking center.
-
Always liked the inherent enthusiasm in that one
Fuck yeah! Center! FOB/DFC!
-
We are being ghosted.
I say no more answers until OP comes back to the thread! >:D
I didn't want to guess which abbreviations because the question was too general 8)
-
Yeah, WTF
-
Most important one
DFC = Dead F'n Center
-
Love me some DFC...

Or as the Z-Man lists on his uploads:
FOB/DFC/KFC/ZFC/AARP

I think I now understand what MDC stands for, but I'm still puzzled by TORRES.
Joe TORREZ, former manager of the New York Yankee's.
