I'm curious. I'm shopping around. It's almost time for me to buy microphones.
-
ive run a bunch of diff mics into the ua-5 and liked them. i really like the studio projects c-4 if you are on a limited ($300) budget
-
I run ADK A51S LEs into my UA5. Love 'em. If you get a set of the ADK TLs in Yard Sale, you'll walk around with a woody for a week, they are that good...
The Studio Project C4s are nice, as are the C3s.

TLs and AT943s. Both sound great.
-Kevin
-
I like my AKG 393 & UA5 combination.
-
I love the TL -> Wmod UA-5.
Is your UA-5 modded?
-
I run Octava MK012>UA-5....only done it a few times as this is my backup rig. but I've liked what I've heard enough to know that I wouldn't throw too much of a fit if I were ever "forced out" of laptop recording :)
-
My UA-5 is a wmod...almost forget I ran AKG 391/93 for a while too.
-Kevin
-
I run AKG 391's through my diginmod and they sound great.
-
SP C4's>digi mod UA5. I dig the results... 8)
-
Mine is a warm mod. And it's getting lonely without mics.
-
Okay, so why are the TL's so much more expensive than the C4's? Are they that much better? Are there comparisons out there anywhere to listen to?
-
They are similar mics when it comes to features. Matched pairs of TL's clock in around $795 with shouckmounts, case, screens, unmatched can be had for less. I haven't heard any C4 recordings, but I have many TL recordings if you want to check some out.
-

multiple patterns in one mic. better quality imho
Are they that much better?
i personally would say yes
Are there comparisons out there anywhere to listen to?
i also have plenty of TL sourced shows you could check out
-
You know I will hype the ADK A51 STpros that I use but you know what those sound like also.
On the subject of sound I will post another Charlie Hunter show tonight on bt.etree the sound is better than the last IMO.
These mics have blown away any others in the price range but definately bigger than a set of C4's. Sometimes Size does matter.
-
Sometimes Size does matter.
definantly true. i tape in a few places where i have to set up in the back or front of the balcony because my rig interferes with the house video :-X
-
Right on. Thanks for weighing in. Those ST Pros did quite the job at that Hunter Trio show. How much do they usually run $-wise?
-
I recently picked up a pair of AT 3035's to use with my p-mod UA-5. So far I am very pleased with the results.
-
studio projects c4s vs adk tls -- this is really apples vs. oranges. The C4s are front address small diagphram mics (same configuration as neumann km184, akg c480s, etc.) while the adks are side address large diagphram mics (same configuration as neumann u89s, etc.)
I think the ua5 matches nicely with virtually any mic -- the real question should be of which mics you like the sound of.
-
yeah. i need to find a phish show or something that was taped with a variety of different mics and do some comparison listens.
-
i have a sampler somewhere that had like 2-3 shows (alpine and creek this summer???, i know my TL's were on there from alpine) show and a snippet of one single song with each source that had surfaced
lemme see if i can dig it up
-
IMO, all of the various Oade MOD UA-5s are exceptional preamps and A/D boxes and will sound awesome w/any mic.
I really enjoyed my MC-012 > stock UA5 as well as any AKG mic through it. I've run Audix 1290hc mics through a stock unit and that sounded good as well, but would definetely benefit from the WMOD.
I would look at it like this.
warm mics (large diaphram included) would be best with a TMOD
bright mics (most small diaphrams...except neumanns) would sound best with a WMOD
but thats just my opinion.
-
I run supperlux and I like them very much for the price, but I someday hope to run TL's>Warm mod. ;D
-
i like the AKG 480's with the warm mod myself...but then again it's your ears that are listening -- GOOD LUCK in the search.

I agree
-
I just tried out my AT853's last night w/ my W-Mod - card caps with the mics clipped to my stocking cap- and I am pretty stoked about the results.
Both my AT853's and TL's sound pretty bodacious through the w-mod.
-
I run tl>wmod. You just cant wrong with the combo. I have also run tl>stock ua5. I can add audio tech at825>wmod or stock which sounds good too. I have the at825 on prema loan and I use it sometimes in clubs
-
I have considered geting a pair of c4's and selling the tl's. Its just easier runing small diaphram mics and I dont tape that much anymore

This is why I picked up the AT's.
I hate stand footprint, myself...

I've run:
Oktava MC012 > pmod
Oktava MC012 & AT831 > pmod (Oktava XLR & AT RCA)
Josephson c42mp > pmod (this is my favorite so far)
I just had my pmod converted to a tmod and it gets its first test tomorrow night.

So I had a conversation with my wallet yesterday, went something like this:
Me: hey wallet, I think i'm going to buy some mics.
Wallet: are you a fucking idiot? have you seen our fridge lately? the one that has 2 veggie burgers and a half empty container of cream cheese in it, and NOTHING else?
Me: yeah, but taping is more fun than eating.
Wallet: good point, what mics were you thinking about?
Me: TL's
Wallet: again, are you a fucking idiot? do you realize that you have a court date in two weeks in new jersey for having empty beer bottles in your car from the Camden Phish lot? This will not be cheap.
Me: yeah, I know.
Wallet: Did you forget that you have a mortgage?
Me: Okay, okay, I'll get the C4's.
Decision made, let the stand and cable shopping begin.
-
LOL
-
+T for new mics and your wallet for trying to keep you in check
-
So, now that it's decided, anyone got fun recommendations on stands and mic cables?
-
Sounds like your wallet's in cahoots with my wife...

Michael, tell you what- buy me a beer or two and you can have my extra set of mogamis that are just sitting at my house.

I think, sir, that you may just have a deal. 8)

And a helluva deal it is..........+T to both
-
as far as a stand, think about what heights you will be running at- i never run over 7-8' so the small bogen black stand works for me, but there are beefier ones out there. dont forget the thread adapter
-
You (and anyone else in the confederation working in d.c.) up for beers after work on Monday? I think I"m gonna try to have my maiden taping voyage be Thursday night at the ABB show at Nissan. (with borrowed mics).
-
im down. where do you all want to meet? (you should post this down in the team thread too) mattd might be in as well
-
How much are the C4's?
T+ for the wallet conversation
-
in the neighborhood of $320ish...
